Newton Andy Holaday, age 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 16th at his home in Alamo, Nevada, a few hundred feet from where he was born.
Born June 10, 1932 to Fanchon Richard Holaday, Newt grew up in Alamo, attending schools there and graduating from Pahranagat Valley High School. He was a proud member of the 1950 Basketball Team which won Pahranagat Valley’s first state championship title.
Newt enlisted in the Navy after High School and became a member of the Sea Bees. During the Korean War he served in Korea, Guam, and Japan, as well as attaché duty in the mainland United States.
Newt returned to Alamo after his military service and began his career in construction. During this time back in Alamo he met Ina Sharon Ryder and they married on July 5th, 1958. Together they raised three children, attended and traveled to countless ball games and school activities. Newt and Ina spent many weekends taking their family and many friends into the wide open spaces of Nevada, hunting, fishing, camping, and chasing cows.
Newt was well known for his Dutch Oven cooking, which he cooked for family and friends and even the entire town once in a while, be it the annual High School Rodeo or the Alamo 4th of July celebration. He always cooked with his wife Ina by his side, they were an inseparable team and were together for over 58 years.
Newt was always quick to jump in and help those in need. He repaired cars and equipment for anyone and everyone around the valley. He performed Search and Rescue, served as a volunteer firefighter, and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He volunteered his time coaching, driving, umpiring and refereeing. He was fiercely proud of his family and his home town of Alamo. He delighted in all the successes of his children and grandchildren. He was especially proud that he started a tradition that spawned three generations of Pahranagat Valley High School State champions.
Newt is survived by his wife Ina and his three children – his son Vern of Alamo Nevada; his daughter Charis Foremaster and her husband Kelly of Las Vegas Nevada; and his son Wade and his wife Cinda of Springfield Oregon. He was also proud Papa Newt to his seven grandchildren – Andy, Judd, Scout, Joel, Brant, Garret, and Taron and two great grandchildren, Sophia and Clara. Newt also is survived by two sisters and two brothers; Ione Woods, Norene Tolmie, Cyril Holaday Jr., and Merl Holaday. He was preceded in death by his parents Cyril and Fanchon Holaday as well as his sister Ila Shankle.
