Wilhelmina (Minnie) Englina (Anglina) Reinholt Grove was born May 12, 1913, in Stoneham Township, Chippewa County, on the family farm near Maynard to Theodore August and Berendina (Dena) Boike Reinholt. She was baptized June 15, 1913, and confirmed March 27, 1927, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City.
She attended Maynard Public School, walking the mile along the railroad tracks with her three brothers and two sisters. She worked at Yock’s Mercantile General Store in Clara City for 3 ½ years. She met Bennie Odean Grove who was part of the Scandinavian community across the Crow River to the south. Minnie worked and continued to save her pay check of $30 a month, by living with her grandparents in Clara City. She did this so she could help buy house furnishings for their rented farm after they were married, March 31, 1937. Living near the Wang Lutheran Church she transferred her membership and through the years was active with the women’s group, Sunday school and youth group as she had done at Immanuel where she had served as Superintendent of Sunday School, teaching, singing in a quartette, and choir. She was also a great seamstress and quilt maker. She worked alongside her husband farming, doing chores, raising chickens, and gardening. She loved to cook, bake and canned most all their produce, chicken and meat. She also loved to entertain, plan birthday parties and house parties. Odean played violin and Minnie played the piano and they were part of a group that entertained at many events. They had four children, Marlys Jeanne, David Dean, James Anthony and Dianne Lynette. All active in the church and 4-H.
In 1954, the family moved to the Grove home place and in 1973, Odean and Minnie retired to Granite Falls and built a new home. After seven great years of retirement, Odean died on August 30, 1980.
Minnie volunteered at the Manor helping with Bingo, delivering flowers and doing the shopping cart for residents, making lap quilts and World Relief quilt tops for the church women to tie. She enjoyed her Monday morning neighborhood coffee parties, usually meeting at Hardee’s getting free coffee with their Hardees mug. She was the family (and also Granite’s) donut lady. Odean taught her how to make Lefsa - her first batch was more like flatbread, but got better. She made rosettes, and real flatbread and Lutefisk was a holiday special. Odean learned to eat pork hocks and sauerkraut.
Minnie went on bus trips with friends and did lots of sightseeing. In 1981, she took her first airplane ride to Arizona with friend, Marie Pearson. They had traveled around Lake Superior, the Amana Colonies and Canadian Rockies and along the pacific coast to Mexico, Washington DC and the east coast. They also took small trips to the Grotto, MN State Capitol, Betty Crocker Mill and many more. Because Minnie never drove a car, her family surprised her on her 75th birthday by renting a limousine and taking her and her friends from church to Granite Falls and rides for everyone all afternoon. She was still gardening, mowing her lawn and shoveling the snow on a corner lot at 92 years old, but decided it was time to retire again. She moved to Paynesville Independent Living at 700 Stearns Place and enjoyed the college dorm living for 10 ½ years. Lots of socializing, exercising, coffee drinking, games and parties. She loved when her family visited and always was full of stories and fun. She also helped with Saturday Morning Bingo at Koronis Manor. When she couldn’t travel to Nordland Lutheran for church, she would attend the service at the Manor on Sundays. She celebrated her 100th birthday on Mother’s Day of 2013, followed later by a great family reunion with all her family attending. Having to use a walker for stability didn’t slow her down. She was always assisting neighbors and getting their mail, visiting, and reminding others of activities. Loss of eye sight and declining hearing and a worn out back made it hard to get up in the morning. For a time when she was down and out, she went on Hospice for 3 months but she improved and graduated. On July 13th, she moved to Koronis Manor. She was really getting to enjoy all the perks, especially the whirl pool baths and the manicure and nail polish. She tried her hand at painting-couldn’t believe she had that talent. She met and became acquainted with so many people that were relatives or had other ties. Her mind was 110% and she never lost it.
After a short illness she died peacefully on Monday morning, Nov 23rd, at Koronis Manor with family present. She is survived by children: Marlys Pearson of Paynesville, David (Shirley) Grove of Granite Falls, and Dianne (Bill) Rentschler of Powell, WY; grandchildren: Nancy (Rodney) Olson, Loren (Vicky) Pearson, Richard (Louise) Grove, Connie (Sheldon) Kimpling, Michael (Kristin) Grove, Steven (Christa) Grove, Julie (Steven) Aalfs, Amy Grove, Kristi Zellmann, Mark (Andrea) Rentschler, and Jane (James) Faulkner; great-grandchildren: Travis (Amanda) Olson, Shari Olson, Steven (Erin) Pearson, Daniel (Ashley) Pearson, Kristin (Daniel) Archer, Kevin (Shannon ) Grove, Andrew Grove, Justin (Kristina) Kimpling, Jared Kimpling, Jessica Kimpling, Tyler Grove, Lauren Grove, Mallory Grove, Kate Grove, Bailey (Travis) Wubben, Taylor Aalfs, Aaron Zellmann, Zachery Zellmann, Alex Zellmann, Taylor Rentschler, James W.
