    • In the 1950 census, he and three of his siblings (Carolyn is missing) and his father are living with his paternal grandparents in Tracy, San Joaquin County, California.

      He spent 7½ years in the US Army. He was a paratrooper during the Korean war and received a combat inventory badge along with three bronze stars.

      Al spent 19½ years in civil service as an electronic engineer and engineering manager at the Sacramento Logistics Center. He spent the last 5½ years as the senior engineer and deputy engineer of the engineering division where he retired as a GM-15, engineering manager, in August of 1987. He was responsible for managing an annual budget of approximately 50 million dollars and directed 450 personnel consisting of engineers and other technical staff. These personnel provided engineering and technical support to Air Force weapons systems managed by the center, including engineering and technical support for Mission Critical Computer Resources(MCCR)/Embedded Computer Systems(ECS) Software, advanced technologies, reliability and maintainability (R&M), flight test engineering and technical data. For several of these accomplishments, Mr. Patterson in 1980 was one of the three Air Force nominees for the department of defense (DoD) Distinguished Civilian Service award.
