In the 1940 census, she lives with her mother and brother at 2617 West 3rd Street, a rented residence. Florence was a high school graduate, Roland had two years of high school. Marie had a sixth-grade education. Florence was a “comtometer operator” for a wholesale gas and oil company. Roland was a grocery salesman for a retail grocery store.
In the 1940 city directory, she lives at 2617 West 3rd and is a “compt opr” at the Standard Oil Company. In the 1942-43 Duluth city directory, she is Florence I Anderson, a clerk for the Standard Oil Company. She resides at 2131 West 2nd (the same address as her siblings). In the 1944 city directory, she is still Florence I Anderson, now a secretary for the Standard Oil Co. She lives at 2808 West 3rd. In the 1946 directory, she is now a “comp opr” for Standard Oil.
In the 1950 census, she is divorced and living with her parents. She is a stenographer for the city.
Florence was probably a comptometer operator at Standard Oil. A comptometer was an electro-mechanical adding machine and computational device used before digital computers.
The June 25th birthdate is the birthdate on her birth certificate and on her death certificate. Mabel or Helga’s little book had Florence’s birthdate as May 25th.
According to her obituary in the Duluth newspaper, she died on a Sunday at her home on West 12th Street. She had been a lifelong Duluth resident and had graduated from Denfield High School in 1932. She was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and had been a WAVE in World War II. She worked for Standard Oil Co. and for the City of Duluth’s engineering department. She was a member of Hillside United Methodist Church and its Elizabeth circle. She was also a member of the Ensign Garden Club and of Bethany Lutheran Church’s Sunshine Club. She was survived by her two sons and seven grandchildren.
