  Notes	In the 1950 census, he was living on a ranch in or near Polson with his mother, step-father (Alvin Merritt), and two half-brothers (Alvin Jr. and Rex). Joe E. Holman, a longtime resident of Kamiah, passed away at his home Saturday. He was surrounded by family, along with his beloved dog Oreo. Joe - husband, father, grandfather, and friend - was born April 21, 1926, in Springfield, Mo., and moved to Polson, Mont., four years later. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 at age 17. He served aboard the USS Omni Bay, the USS Mississippi, and the USS Helena. His service to his country was a deep source of pride for him and for us, his family. After he was honorably discharged he returned to Polson, where he met Vera Carlson. They were married Sept. 12, 1951. They and their five children lived in various cities in the Northwest while he worked construction; Joe was a proud member of the Ironworkers union, Local No. 14, for over 50 years. Joe and his family settled in Kamiah in 1971. After Vera's death in 1998, Joe was fortunate to meet Phyllis Wakefield. They were married in 2002 and also made their home in Kamiah. Joe loved the outdoors, he loved to travel, and he loved his family. Family was always the most important part of his life. A fact we are all so very grateful for. Joe is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Larry and Tom; two daughters, Cheryl and Patti; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Rex and Alvin Merritt. He was preceded in death by Vera and a son, Wesley. A memorial dinner will be planned for spring 2012.
