Notes |
- Both parents born in Canada.
Shown as age 12 in the 1870 census.
In the 1895 state census, he is called Alfred Fortier. He and his wife and his wife’s two youngest brothers live in Minneapolis. He is an engineer.
In the 1900 census, Henry, Lila, and Lila’s brothers are living next to each other on, apparently, the corner of 24th Ave. N.E., and Central Ave. E. in Minneapolis. Walter and George Ripley are living with the Fortiers. Edward and his wife live next door. Henry Fortier is a stationary engineer.
In the 1905 state census, Henry and family live at 2918 28th Avenue S. in Minneapolis. The household consists of Henry A., 49, Lila M., 36, Howard F., 2, and Anna Fortier, a 72 year-old widow who had been in Minneapolis for 6 months. Henry and his mother were born in Canada, as were their parents. Lila was born in Minnesota but her father was born in Maine and her mother in the West Indies. Henry is a steam fitter, Lila is a housekeeper. Henry has been in Minnesota for 40 years and his mother for 6 months. Henry and his family have lived at their current location for a year and a month.
In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he is Henry A Fortier, an engineer living at 506 East 18th Street.
In the 1910 census, Henry, Lila M., and Howard F. were living in a rented apartment at 1715 Fifth (doesn’t say whether it’s Ave. or St.) in Minneapolis. Henry is reported to have emigrated in 1860. Living with the family as a boarder is a single woman, 18 year-old Marguerite Buss, a magazine stenographer.
The Minnesota Deaths and Burials database as FamilySearch pilot gives the death of Henry “Forties” as 3 April 1921 in Minneapolis and his wife’s name as Lila Ripley. The MHS death index agrees. The 1921 death date would be inconsistent with the indication in the 1920 census that Lila was already a widow.
His death certificate shows him as the husband of Lila Ripley and his address as 1114 14th Avenue S in Minneapolis. He was a stationary engineer and he died at Minneapolis General Hospital which was the informant for his death certificate. (The death certificate shows his place of death as “Hopewell Hospital.”) He died from bronchopneumonia following asthma and emphysema.
