Wilmer worked as a laborer at the Ford plant. In the 1940 census, he and his wife and son lived in a rented residence in Minneapolis. Wilmer was not regularly employed and had worked for the WPA in road construction. His obit said that he lived in Woodburn, Oregon, where he had moved to 11 years previously. He was a machinist for a farm equipment company in Minneapolis before moving to Oregon.
