Vernon had a career as rocket engine inspector in the aerospace industry, retiring from Martin Marietta, Cape Canaveral and the Titan IIIC program in 1983. Survivors include his sons Cal, St. Petersburg, FL and Jotham, Bonita Springs, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay; one brother, Joe Foelgner, Jr.; and two sisters, Ida Fanshier and Vera Mulder.
