- John Francis Bork, Jr. age 74, died peacefully on January 14, 2017, at home after a brave fight against cancer.
John was proceeded in death by his mother Francis Bork, father John Bork Sr., and wife Peggy Bork. He is survived by his brother Robert Bork (Bonnie Bork), daughter Denise Connors (Mike Connors), son Kevin Bork (Nolma Bork), daughter Christina Kendler (Dean Kendler) and son Stephen Bork. Also survived by his much-loved grandchildren, Deanne Nettles, Jonathan Cox, Noah Bork, Shelby Bork, Ethan Kendler, Rylee Kendler, Luka Kendler and Ozzi Kendler. And great-grandchildren Christopher Cox, Derek Cox, and Adalynn Nettles.
John served overseas in Germany during the Vietnam era. While overseas he earned a good conduct metal, an overseas service metal and achieved the rank of SP5. After his service he was released with honorable discharge. He grew up in New York with his parents and brother Bob. In younger years both he and his brother worked together at Defriest Funeral Homes as part of the professional staff. Prior to moving to California he met his first wife, Carole Englin, and they welcomed their daughter Denise. In 1969 John and Carole moved to California and welcomed their son Kevin. He worked in car sales and then later as a bank president. Years later, John met Peggy, they were wed and welcomed daughter Christina and son Stephen.
After the death of his wife Peggy in 1999, John moved from Orange, CA to Palm Desert, CA to surround himself with his passion, golf. In 2004 he met his wonderful girlfriend Judy Henderson, and for 12 years they enjoyed spending time together with friends and family. John always felt blessed to have expanded his family and to become close with Judy's children and grandchildren and become a part of their lives also.
John was loved by many, friends were family also. He was Dad or Papa to many of his children's friends. An example of this unconditional love was evident in 2014 when John's entire family, including his ex-wife and her new family, came together for Christmas in celebration of John and our times together.
In his golf travels, John was proud to have obtained 2 "hole-in-ones". The first on his son Kevin's birthday and the second while golfing with his brother Bob, daughter Christina and son Stephen, while playing in a charity golf tournament raising funds for prostate cancer. Earlier in that same year he and his son Stephen played in and won the Oasis Country Club Member-Guest Tournament.
John will be remembered for his warm smile, his friendly and welcoming manner, his often overzealous stories, his love for being in the kitchen, and of course, his well-stocked bar. When asked before he passed what he wanted us to share with loved ones, he responded, "I hope you laugh often….Cheers!"
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017; staring at 11:00AM at Christ of the Desert Church in Palm Desert, California. Interment will be held at a later date at Riverside National Cemetery.
