Notes |
- In the 1940 census, he is still single and living at home. He’s shown as a barber.
Our dad, Obert Benjamin Skogstad, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, April 27, 2009. Dad was born July 30, 1914, at Blaisdell, N.D., to Louis and Anna Skogstad.
His older sister, Mildred Ringoen, preceded him in death in 2006, and a younger brother, Auther Skogstad, in 2003.
Dad was 19 when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for three years; at age 22 he went to barber school in Fargo, N.D. At age 25, Dad left North Dakota and worked in Wenatchee for a short time before moving to Seattle. Dad worked for Boeing from 1941 until 1945. He then enrolled at Seattle Bible Institute. Dad met our mother, Ellen Mae McNutt, there and they were married July 26, 1946.
Dad graduated as an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God in 1948, and he and Mother moved to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley. They became pastors at the Assembly of God Church in Lapwai in August 1951. During this time Dad also was a full-time barber in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley. In 1961, they resigned from the church in Lapwai and moved to Clarkston. He continued as a barber and minister in different churches in the region.
Dad also ministered for the Clarkston Police Department as a chaplain for many years. He and Mom would conduct Sunday church services at the Clarkston jail, as well as in many of the nursing homes in the area.
Dad preached, played his guitar and sang. His whole life was with a vision of serving God with everything he had.
He loved to take his family camping, fishing and huckleberry picking. Dad loved to garden and work in his yard. He was inventive and very creative, and loved to work with his hands.
Our dad was a loving and tenderhearted man who loved Jesus with all of his heart. He prayed for others and served God with faithful diligence. He was a good husband, and wonderful father and grandfather. Although dad lived his last year in an Alzheimer's facility, he never forgot to pray and read his Bible. He would pray for other patients there; they loved him and referred to him as their resident pastor.
Now that Dad has gone to be with Jesus, we are left with many wonderful, loving memories.
Dad is survived by his loving wife, Ellen; his daughters, Roseanne Cowles and her husband Ed of Lake Stevens, Wash., and Charlene Montgomery and her husband Clyde of Clarkston; his sons, Larry Skogstad and his wife Linda of Allyn, Wash., and Ken Skogstad and his wife Luz Marina of Tukwila, Wash.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. May 19 at Faith Tabernacle Church in Lewiston.
