Notes |
- According to the Find A Grave entry for him, as created by his grandson, Andrew Howard:
William "Fred" Howard was born as Carroll Spencer Hyland to William Andrew Jackson Hyland (1844 - 1884) and Charlotte Frances Reid in 1884, in New York City.
Carroll Spencer Hyland married Harriet "Hattie" Witbeck in about 1903 in San Francisco. They went through the terrible 1906 earthquake together and afterward lived in a tent city. They had one son also named Carroll Spencer Hyland (1906 - 1990) born shortly thereafter. Hattie divorced Carroll later, in April 1913.
Sometime between 1913 and 1915, Carroll Spencer Hyland changed his name to William Fred Howard. Beforehand, he left his first wife and son, without explanation. Clearly, he wanted a fresh start.
William "Fred" Howard worked for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1916 to 1952, with the exception during the war.
Fred married Mae Johnson of Richfield, Utah in 1920 in Salt Lake City. Mae was murdered in December of 1921 in San Pedro, California, by her brother-in-law, Oscar Thompson. Thompson killed his wife, Mae's sister, in the same attack.
Fred Howard tried his hand at love one more time. He married Vilate Elizabeth Loveless Bailey in 1922. She kept him grounded, and they delivered one son, Jackson Bailey Howard. When his little Jackson would asked him from whence they came, Fred would reply, "From Irish Kings or horse-thieves, I'm not sure which." Fred told his son, "Howard Street (in San Francisco) is named after me." Clearly, it is the other way around.
