    Notes
    • Marie was born Sept. 21, 1914, on her parents' homestead in Rainbow Township, northwest of Ray. She was the youngest of the six children in her family. Her father, Anton Binde and her mother, Lena Flekstad Binde, had both immigrated from the Trondheim region of Norway.

In her autobiography, compiled when she was 84, she wrote about those growing-up years with her family on the North Dakota prairie, and about her experiences in the community, their one room country school, and their church.

She graduated from Ray High School in 1933. She attended the Interstate Business College in Fargo and following graduation, she was employed at North Dakota State University.

Prior to the start of World War II, she was offered a civil service appointment in Washington, D.C., as a stenographer at the Pentagon where she worked for five years.

Marie married Ernest Qualley May 26, 1945, in Washington, D.C., while he was serving in the Merchant Marines. In 1946, they moved back to their home community of Rainbow Valley where they farmed and raised their five children.

She was a very devoted mother.

She lived on the family farm until Ernest's death in 1988, when she moved to a condominium in Williston. In March, 2003, she moved to Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home in Williston, and in September, 2003, she moved to Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, Mont.
Marie died at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, MT on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in the loving company of her family. She will be dearly missed.

Marie was a member of the Rainbow Valley Lutheran Church and the ELCW, a member of the Champion Homemakers Club and the Sons of Norway.

Among Marie's favorite memories in her later years were her trips to Norway to visit extended family and the birthplaces of her parents. Her first visit had been with her sister, Agnes, in 1970 and the second visit was in 1993, with her daughter, Sandra.
Preceding Marie in death were her parents; her son, Darrell; her husband, Ernest; three brothers, Tom, Arnold, and Pete; and two sisters, Agnes Asleson and Annie Quale.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters; Ronald and his wife, Kathleen, of Lafayette, Colo., Lyle and his wife, Patti, of Williston, Sandra and her husband, Leonard Hall, of Whitefish, Mont., and Sharlene and her husband, Eric Jonson, of Snohomish, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, Deanna (Qualley) Bergum and her husband, Derek, Cheryl (Qualley) Swanson and her husband, Kyle, Erika and Laura Qualley; Andrea, Vanessa, Rachel, and Jana Hall; Kara (Jonson) Smonson and her husband, Adam, Leif and Kindra Jonson; one great-grandson, Tranq Smonson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
