Nicholas came to the US when he was 21yrs, joining a brother in Minneapolis, Later he moved to Butte, Mt and lived for some time in Seattle, Washington and Lake Preston, SD. He went back to Norway in 1893 and brought his sister Martha back with him. He moved to Mellette, Spink SD in 1896 where he operated a building and contracting business. He and his sister lived north of Mellette, and she kept house for him. After he married Charlotte he built their home in the south part of Mellette. He continued his building business, building many houses and farms in the area. He built the Mellette Methodist Church in 1912, after a fire destroyed the old church. From 1919 to 1925 he was a partner in a furniture and hardware store in Mellette, known as Spratt & Odegaard. He later ran a Standard Oil Service Station. He was very interested in politics and served two terms as State Republican Representative from Spink Co in 1924 and 1926. He was mayor of Mellette for a number of yrs, and served on the school board.
