  Notes	Alaine was born in Crosby, Minn., the third of eight children to Thomas and Val Smith. Except for a few years in her 20s, Alaine lived in Crosby. After graduating from Crosby-Ironton High School she completed post-high school training (then called Normal School) to qualify for a teaching position. She taught school in a rural, one room, multi-grade school, before moving to Chicago where she did office work. She married William J. McNelly in 1943. After a number of years as a homemaker, she re-entered the work force and served as an office manager. Upon her retirement, she was active in the original Geritol Frolics. Throughout her life Alaine enjoyed traveling, music, dance, church events, family celebrations and summer days at "the lake." Alaine will be dearly missed by her children, Mary McNelly Rodeberg (Kern), Bill McNelly, Jane McNelly Richtsmeier (Tony) and Jack McNelly (Anne), brothers Boyd Smith and Daniel Smith, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and five siblings. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
