Notes |
- Donald Detlie, age 73, of Northfield, passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at his home following a seven-year struggle with cancer.
Donald Leroy Detlie was born April 14, 1940, in Cannon Falls, Minn., as the son of Oscar and Ida (Svien) Detlie. At a young age his mother was diagnosed with TB and Don was raised by his foster mother, Anna Halverson, and her daughter, Sarah Simonson, in Dennison. He attended Dennison School through eighth grade and then Northfield High School.
Following school, he began his long-time employment with Great Western Railroad as a brakeman. During his 39 years on the railroad, Great Western was combined with Northwestern Railroad and later with Union Pacific, and he retired in 2002 as a conductor.
On May 7, 1960, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Vang at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield and they made their first home in Northfield. They moved to Randolph for 12 years and in 1977 moved to their long-time home in Northfield on Jefferson Drive.
Don was always busy in his yard mowing and flower gardening making everything just right. Christmas was his favorite holiday and he decorated their home with Christmas lights for many years. He loved to play cribbage and euchre in Dennison, bingo at the Eagles Club and the casino and card games with his family and friends. He enjoyed helping anyone who needed assistance, especially older folks and during retirement he volunteered at Northfield Senior Center. The last five years he and Mary spent a lot of time at the cabin on Cadotte Lake in Wisconsin where he was busy with yard work, fishing, playing with the grandchildren and taking long walks.
Don is survived by his wife, Mary; children, David of Faribault, Jeffrey of New Orleans, Mark and friend Kim of Northfield, Kristin (Michael) Stanefski, South St Paul, Lisa (Trevor) Pumper of Northfield; sisters, Phyllis Ellingboe of Wabasha, Doris (Norman) Anderson of Cannon Falls, Julie (Wayne) Eddy of Northfield, Judy Kasa of Northfield; brother, Lenny Simonson of Dennison; grandchildren, Emma and Luke Stanefski, Jordan, Hank, and Josh Detlie, Logan and Max Pumper; and twin great-grandchildren, Maddison and Jaxon Detlie. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and sisters, Ruth Lundgren and Lorraine Buetow.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with burial at Prairie Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services.
