  Notes	Lived in Brookings, South Dakota. Called, with various spellings, Neil, Niel, and Neal. The newspaper article describing his wedding to Ferne Jones said that Neal was a “former student at Minnesota” and, at the time of his marriage, was attending the University of Washington. His obit: Neil, a fifty year resident of Salem, passed away quietly on Saturday night. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Ferne, who left us in 2010. Neil retired from a career as an engineer with the federal highway department and was active in Lion's club both before and after retirement as well as meals on wheels and the local food bank. Neil and Ferne were active members of the First Presbyterian Church for many years, particularly when their children were young, but found a spiritual home later in their lives at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Salem, where they were both members until their deaths. During Neil's long life he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s', on tugboats on the Mississippi river, as a Medical tech during WWII, and a Civil Engineer for the BLM, then finally with the Federal Highway department. Neil graduated phi beta kappa from University of Washington in Civil Engineering. He was the first of his family with a college education thanks to the GI bill. Neil will be greatly missed by his by his sister Margaret (Peg) Nilsen of Edmunds WA, and his children Nancy/ Derroll Matthews, Mary/John Barry, Ed/Ingrid Burghardt, and grandchildren Joanna Matthews, Ryan Burghardt, and Andrena Burghardt as well as by many friends and other family.
