Notes |
- He is not mentioned in the Kånna 1877-1881 Household Examination so it is unlikely that he and Emelie were married in Kånna.
He and Emelie joined the First Covenant Church of Superior, a Swedish Lutheran Church, in 1896.
In the 1896 Superior city directory, he is Frank Fogelquist of F Fogelquist & Co., Practical Tinners and Sheet Metal Workers, of 915 N 5th, which is also his residence.
In the 1897 Superior city directory, he is now just Frank Fogelquist (not & Co.), Practical Tinner and Sheet Metal Worker. He still has his business at 915 N 5th but he now resides, with Alexander Fogelquist and Charles Fogelquist, at 412 Fisher Av.
In the 1899 city directory, he is a tinner with his business at 1123 N 5th, residing at 912 Baxter Av, the same address as Alexander Fogelquist and Charles Fogelquist.
In the 1900 Superior city directory, he is Frank Fogelquist, Tinsmith, Bicycle Repairer and Builder, of 1123 N 5th, residing at 1209 Winter.
In the 1900 census, he is a bicycle repairer living at 1209 Winter Street in Superior. He owns the home, without a mortgage. His wife is Emily, to whom he has been married for 21 years, has had 13 children, of which 7 are still alive. He and Emily came to the U.S. in 1879. Also living in the household is Gottfrid Fogelquist, b. Nov 1867, Carl Fogelquist, b. Feb 1870, Oscar Carlson, b, Aug 1869, Frank Fogelquist, b. May 1857, Lina Carlson, wife of Oscar, b. Jun 1875 in Sweden, Sandy Fogelquist, b. Aug 1879 in Wisconsin, divorced, and Gust Carlson, b. Jan 1873.
In the 1901 city directory, he is Frank Fogelquist, Practical Tinner and Bicycle Repairer, 1123 n 5th, Tel 4370, r 1209 Winter. Charles Fogelquist, laborer, and Alexander Fogelquist, tinner, also reside at 1209 Winter.
In the 1905 Wisconsin state census, Frank Fogelquist, 49, and his wife Carrie, 49, both born in Sweden, were living in a house that they owned free of mortgage. Frank was a bicycle repairer. The census form gives the location as 5th Street West, North of Broadway, in Superior.
In the 1910 and 1920 censuses, a Frank Fogelquist was living in Superior with his wife Carrie. This Frank was a tinsmith and, in the 1920 census, claimed to have come to the U.S. in 1880 from Sweden.
If he was in the U.S. in 1880 he may be the Frank Gustaveson, 26, nephew, farm laborer, living on the John Peterson farm in Vasa, Goodhue County, Minnesota. A Franz Gustafsson, b. ca 1855, and a Fran Gustavson, b. ca 1854, arrived in New York from Sweden in April and June, respectively, of 1880. Of course, if Frank was in the U.S. in 1880, he was not the father of Alexander Emil.
Carl Johan says: Frank Fogelquist’s full name was Frans Johan Edvard Fogelqvist, born 22 Jan 1855 in Kristdala parish, Kalmar län, Småland. His father was the horse doctor Frans Johan Edvard Johansson Fogelquist (1836-1916) and his wife Josefina Rosengren (1828-1863). Josefina was not related to the beheaded Carl Fredrik Rosengren (1778-1823) (see #12377).
Jan Johansson has the Frank J E Fogelqvist who was born in 1855 marrying Gustava Vilhelmina Kristiansson (1856-1928). In another entry, he has Gustava as a wife of this Frank’s father, Frans Johan Edvard Johansson (1836-1916).
The implied birth years for Emelie’s last husband in the various censuses are as follows:
1885 Minnesota census: age 35, therefore 1849 or 1850
1895 Minnesota census: age 43, therefore 1851 or 1852
1900 U.S. census: specifically April 1853 (the corresponding date for his wife is October 1844 but she was correctly shown as age 56)
1905 Wisconsin census: age 49, therefore 1855 or 1856
1910 U.S. census: age 55, therefore 1854 or 1855
1920 U.S. census: age 64, therefore 1855 or 1856
The records of the First Covenant Church of Superior has his death date as 31 Jan 1930 and his age at death as 76 years, 9 months, and 27 days. That would put his birth date as 4 April 1853 which the church says elsewhere in their records. They also show his place of birth as somewhere (Kristala?) in Kalmar, Sweden, part of Småland.
