- In the 1900 census, he and Rakel lived in Sverdrup Twp, Griggs County, North Dakota. He had come to the U.S. in 1873 and Rakel in 1893. Living next to them or with them were Rakel’s brothers Ludwig and Reier and Reier’s wife Annie.
In the 1910 census, he and Rakel lived in the Killen district of Clackamas County, Oregon. He and Rakel had been married for 12 years and had no children. Included in his household were his mother-in-law (also recorded in this census as living with her son Reier), his sister-in-law Therese Berg, and a hired hand.
In the 1920 census, the Lees (John C and Rakel) lived in Hemet Twp, Riverside County, California, with her sister Terese Berge and two adopted daughters: Hedrea Lee, 10, and Helga Wormdal, 11. Both of the girls had been born in Oregon. John was a farmer, “travelling and working.”
In the 1930 census, the Lees were back in the Killin precinct of Clackamas County. Living with them are Rachel’s nieces, Helga, 23, and Hedwig, 21, Wormdahl.
In the 1940 census, he was the “father-in-law” living with the Oscar and Hedvig Satrum family in the Killin precinct of Clackamas County.
