- Elizabeth Kornder, 85, passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 with her sons, Ted and Tom, at her side.
The wake will be Saturday, Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of the Prairie Church followed by the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
Liz was born to Thomas and Mary Kuduk, Polish immigrants, on May 1, 1926 in Northeast Minneapolis, the youngest of 12 children. She and Eugene Kornder were married Oct. 9, 1948. After living in Bloomington and farming the Kornder family farm on 24th Avenue, they bought the William Stier farm in 1960 and moved to Belle Plaine in 1964. Gene, Liz and their four children owned and operated the Kornder Berry Farm through the early 90s.
Over the years, Gene and Liz employed many, many high school students to cut asparagus, direct traffic in the berry field, pick melons and sweet corn, dig potatoes and onions, cut cabbage and pick pumpkins and squash which were sold at the Minneapolis and St. Paul Farmers' Markets. Both Gene and Liz enjoyed spending many hours at Brewery Creek helping wherever needed. Liz loved the colorful hanging baskets and the wide variety of flowers and vegetable plants that her son Tim and his family produced at Brewery Creek. She loved selling the hanging baskets at the Farmers' Markets.
Liz enjoyed her many trips to visit her daughter, Nancy and husband, Richard, touring the sites in Rhode Island. For many years, Georgine Gansen, a good neighbor and friend, spent many hours visiting, playing cards and taking Liz to visit local shops. Liz worked for Minnesota Valley Electric Coop from the day the strawberries were hailed out in 1968 until her retirement in 1991. Liz was an avid gardener nurturing the flower beds at her own home and the numerous flower beds around Our Lady of the Prairie Church. She was very involved in Catholic Aid which hosted fund raisers for both the church and OLP School. She created memorable Halloweens, Christmases and Easters for her family and much loved 11 grandchildren with Wanda the Witch, stuffed Christmas stockings and piñatas.
Liz is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Gene Tom, his children Dan, Jenny, Jeremiah, Matthew and their mother, Rita; Ted, his wife Mary, their children, Tony, his wife Wendy, their children Megan, Adrianna and Ruben; Nick and his wife Annie; Katie and her fiancé Josh Baker, Danika and her brother Damon and their parents Mike and Jolene Rademacher; and Kristi; Liz' daughter, Nancy and her husband Richard Adams; Tim's daughters Alison, her husband Dustin Burstein, their children, Lake and Skylar, Andrea, Ashli and their mother Lori; her brother-in-law, Ray Czech; sister-in-law, Louise Bergman and numerous nieces and nephews.
Liz is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; son, Timothy; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Arrangements are with the Wagner Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Prairie Building Fund.
