- In the 1910 census, she lived with her parents and siblings in Oshkosh. She was employed as a weaver in a matting factory.
She sued her husband for a divorce on the grounds of desertion in Madison in June of 1919. The husband could not be found by the Dane County sheriff at that time.
As Ella M Berger, a 26 year-old widow, she and her five year-old daughter, Lorraine A, lived as a housekeeper in Oscar Engel’s household in Madison in the 1920 census.
In poor health, she came to Oshkosh in the summer of 1921 hoping to regain her health at the Sunnyview sanitorium.
