Notes |
- Griffin Shannon Griffin rejoined her parents, Burnett & Beulah Voss and niece, Holly Furey in Heaven when she died in Oakdale, Minnesota, on March 20, 2004. When she died at Pillars hospice, she went in peace surrounded by those who loved her. She believed in truth, hard work, fierce loyalty and service to the ones she loved. In addition to her family and friends, she loved swinging a golf club on a sunny day, classical music with a special fondness for Bach, and she fulfilled a dream two summers ago and attended a Bach festival in Germany. Born in Northfield, Minnesota, she graduated from Northfield High School and went on to graduate Cum Laude from Carlton College in 1959 and was very active in their alumni association, receiving a distinguished alumni award from Carleton in 2001. She was an educator for over 35 years and, in her career, touched the lives of students, staff, families and communities in Wisconsin, St. Anthony, Onamia, and ended her career at Olson Middle School in Minneapolis. The Olson staff, students, adults, families and community always had a special place in her heart. Her success in middle school reform was recognized by both the Star Tribune and Time Magazine. She was also active in the Minnesota DFL, running for Minnesota State Senate, District 9 in 1976. She was also appointed by Govenor Perpich to a state panel to screen applicants for posts in state government, and was treasurer for Geri Evans, Representative for Minnesota in District 52B. In her working career, she recieved numerous accolades in her efforts to reform education, especially in the middle school grades. She graduated from the Bush Principal's Leadership Program in 1990 and, soon after, was promoted to principal in the Minneapolis Public Schools. She will be fondly remembered by the family members she left behind, including her two children, Kyle and Hayley Griffin, their dad, Bromley Griffin, Hayley's fiance, Michael Forrest, and Kyle's special friend, Jeremiah Edwards. She also leaves behind her three sisters, Carolyn Copeland, Diane Greeno and Heather Tueffel, nephews and nieces, Scott and Andrew Copeland, Heidi Cooley, Lance and Brett Werner, and Lori Foley and Comet, her favorite granddog.
