Notes |
- In the church records for Nils’s baptism, remarks for father: “2den gang leiermaal” and remarks for mother: “1ste gang leiermaal.” This means that this instance for Nils’s father was the second of illicit and punishable intercourse; for Kari it was the first. (Peder’s first instance was Synneve Pedersdatter, born the month before to Anne Kristensdatter of Marifjæren farm.) Nels’s obit said he was born in Lyster.
Nels was found dead in the pasture or field on the Ole B. Fortney farm south of Viroqua, on a Sunday. The obituary went on to say that “Last Wednesday, he had started to walk to Viroqua from the home of Ray Slack where he had been working. He stopped at the home of Ole B. Fortney and then started across the field and that was the last seen of him alive.” The funeral was on a Tuesday at the Kickapoo church. The “Wednesday” was probably August 22, the death date on his gravestone. The “Sunday” then would have been the August 26 date on his county death record.
Shown as Nels P. Bowe on his gravestone.
Shown as Nels F. Bowe, d. August 26th, in the Vernon County death record.
Digitalarkivet’s database for Sogn og Fjordane flytting shows that Nils Pedersen, born in 1854, an unmarried “boy”, left Haflso for “Amerika” on April 9, 1867. This is the same date as Claus Bø left Hafslo. (The out-migration record in the church book shows Niels separately but with the note that he’s with “no. 27 Claus.”)
Not listed in the 1870 or 1880 censuses.
Not listed in the 1865 Norwegian census as living with Claus and Kari. In that census, he is probably the Niels Pederssen, “fosterson”, living with Erik Johannessen, 33, and his wife Kjisti Pedersdatter, 49, of Nøddedal farm in Haflso.
Not listed as living at home at the time of the 1880 census. Shown as “step-son” living with Claus and Carrie in the 1900 census.
According to a newspaper account of an incident that occurred September 17, 1908:
“Mr. Nels Bowe, a farmer living near Readstown, met with a painful accident Thursday evening. While driving home from town his team became frightened and unmanageable and he was thrown from the wagon and had his hip dislocated and several other bone crushed. At the present writing he is getting along nicely under the care of Dr. A.P. Minshall of this city {Viroqua}.”
He was living at home, with Claus and Carrie, in the 1905 Wisconsin state census.
Married a girl from the Dakotas and had a son. The wife later died and the son was raised by the wife's parents. Nels’s obit said “One child in infancy and wife died two years after marriage.”
In the 1910 census, shown as Nels P. Bowe, 53, a widower, a boarder in the household of Lewis Lewison in the town of Viroqua. Nels is shown as a farm laborer. He emigrated in 1865.
Shown as living with Louise in Viroqua in the 1920 census. Naturalized in 1890.
Nels’s estate was administered by M. O. Larson in hearings in March of 1924. The estate’s appraised value was $14,284.37 which was to be offset by debts of approximately $600. The value of his estate was to be equally distributed among his siblings: Sever, Andrew, Louise, Anna, Bertha, Susan, and Martha. Each received approximately $1900.
A claim against the estate was made by Otto Otteson for $310 for Nels’s funeral.

| Nels Pedersen Bowe The background is the same as for the picture of Sever and Andrew from the early 1890s. If the pictures were taken at about the same time, Nels would be in his late 30s in this picture. The original is fading and is mounted on card stock. The photographer is Adlington's Studios of Viroqua, Mt. Sterling, West Lima, and Cashton, Wis. Annotation on the back is in pencil: "Uncle Nels" with "Bowe" added in pen by Cora. |
| Nels Pedersen Bowe This may be Nels. If so, it's from about 1880. The original is about 4x5 and is mounted on board stock. The photographer is Renggly, 216 S. 3rd St., La Crosse. |
