Notes |
- Never married. Lived with her mother and brother Martin according to Cora. Her obit noted that she had been “in poor health nearly all of her life.”
Martin referred to her as his “invalid sister” when he registered for the draft.
Her obit says that she died on September 8th as does the Vernon County death record.
Census-taker Douglas Nelson visited the Anderson/Nundahl/Ekum farms (they were contiguous, apparently, which is also consistent with Cora’s memory) on January 11, 1920, and found:
Martin Ekum, 29, owner of mortgaged property, farmer in general farming, an employer. Susan, mother, 51, widow, immigrated in 1870, naturalized but no date shown. Rhoda, sister, 24, single, born in Wisconsin, no occupation.
An article in the Vernon County Censor, 5 Jan 1921 edition, said “Miss Rhoda Ekum, who has been spending the summer at Minneapolis, returned home for the holidays, accompanied by her brother-in-law, who returned the first of the week …” She had been, apparently, staying with Caroline and her family and George had accompanied her back to Viroqua,
At the time of the 1930 census, Rhoda and her mother were living with Martin in Viroqua.
In the 1940 census, Rhoda lives with her mother and Martin in Viroqua. She had a sixth-grade education.

Group at the Nundahls', about 1919 Cora's mother, Anna Bowe Anderson, is in the middle (4th from left). Cora's aunt Bertha is on the right. Clara is third from the left and Rhoda Ekum is on the far left. Taken at Bertha and Sever's house. The woman in the dark dress, 2nd from the left, is Anna Anderson Nelson.
Group at the Nundahls', about 1919 Cora's mother, Anna Bowe Anderson is on the left in the back row. Cora's aunt Bertha is on the right in the back row, right side. Clara Nundahl is in the middle front. Taken at Bertha and Sever's house. The original is a postcard on which Cora's annotation suggests that the girl on the right in the front is "Anna N." That woman, in the dark dress on Clara's left, is Anna Nelson. The three other women in the picture may be Inge Nundahl (Mrs. Sam), Ida Anderson, and/or Rhoda Ekum.
Odin and Clara with Rhoda Ekum. From the 19-teens. Odin is about 23, Clara 20, and Rhoda 22. Taken in front of the Nundahl house.
Rhoda Ekum and Clara Munson The original is a very small picture, a little larger than a 35 mm frame. Probably taken in the early 1920s when Rhoda was in her mid 20s and Clara, her sister, in her late 20s.
Rhoda Ekum, in her early 40s, and Clara's daughter, Benetta This must have been taken in the late 1930s or the summer of 1940 at the latest because Rhoda died in September of 1940 and Benetta was born in October of 1920. The location of this picture is not known. The original is a small but nicely printed photograph with the words Jiffy Photo Shop Viroqua, Wis. stamped on the back. Cora's annotation is "Rhoda Ekum and Bennetta Olson."
Ekum children and Georgie Probably taken in about 1900, not long before Susan and the younger children moved to California. (Tom, Albert, and Caroline were already out there.) In 1900, Martin would have been 10, Clara would have been 7, Rhoda would have been 4, and Georgie, Martha's son, would have been 2. The original is a print mounted on brown board stock. The studio is Adlington of Viroqua, Wis. On the back Cora wrote across the top "Roada Martin E. Clara." At the bottom she wrote "Georgie."
