- In the 1930 census, she was Fern L Luff, 17, living with her parents in International Falls, Minnesota. She was a typist for a paper company. Her father was a carpenter for a steam railroad. Both of Fern’s parents were born in Wisconsin. All four of her grandparents were born in Germany.
According to Alison: Clarence met Fern in International Falls, Minnesota. Fern lived there with her parents. Clarence was traveling with a carnival. When the carnival left town, Clarence and Fern began writing letters to one another. Fern moved to St. Helens with her family in 1930. Fern and Clarence continued to write. Clarence sent Fern the money to come to Minnesota. Fern traveled to Minnesota and stayed with Clarence and his family. Fern became pregnant on Clarence's birthday in 1933. They were married in Detroit Lakes.
In the 1940 census, she is Fern Thompson, a 27 year-old divorcee, living with her parents and son in St. Helens, Columbia County, Oregon. She was the informant for the household in the census. Fern is a high-school graduate and works as a “machine girl” at a paper mill. She made $900 in 1939. At the time of the census, her father was unable to work so she was the only wage-earner in the household.
In the 1950 census, she is Fern L Ross, 37, wife of Lawrence C, 35. The couple lives in Columbia City, Oregon, with Jay C, 15, and Larry L, 3. Lawrence is a mechanic, Fern is a machine girl at a paper mill. Both boys were born in Oregon.
Fern died of coronary thrombosis.

She was associated with her husband in the Larry Ross Petroleum Products Co. of North Bend. She was a past president of the Coos Bay Area Soroptimists Club and a member of the North Bend Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, BPOE 1160, Ladies of the Elks, and was active in community youth affairs and a volunteer at Bay Area Hospital.
