Notes |
- Born Haakon Berntsen in Gullverket in the eastern part of Eidsvoll, Norway, according to his father’s great-great-grandson who still lives on the home farm.
In his confirmation record, his parents appear to be Bernt Karpen Halvorssen and Gurine Magdalene somebody.
In the 1895 state census, he and his family lived at 3322 Longfellow, on the 2nd floor of a two-family residence in south Minneapolis. The household consisted of Heckon, 46, Lena, 51, Ole, 22, Bennie, 19, Fred, 17, Minnie, 18, and Harry, 12. Heckon and Ole were painters, Bennie was a caller for a railroad. They had been in the state for 10 years and in the local enumeration district for 9 years.
In the 1900 census, indexed as A Benson, the census enumerator obviously had difficulty understanding what to write down for the family, who lived at 3127 18-1/2 Avenue in south Minneapolis. The household consisted of H, b. May 1850, a painter; Lena, b. Jun 1846; Ole, b. Dec 1872, also a painter; B.M., son, b. Sept 1875, a caller for the C M & SP railroad; M.J. a daughter, b. Mar 1877; F.C., a son, b. Dec 1878, a painter; and H.M., b. Aug 1883, a high school student. Everyone had been born in Norway.
In the 1905 state census, the family lived at 2612 E 34th Street in south Minneapolis. The household consisted of Hokan, 54, Lenna, 60, and for some reason the rest of the family was not listed. Ensuing pages in the enumeration start off with different families.
In the 1905 Minneapolis city directory, he is a painter and resides at 2612 E 24th Street.
In the 1910 census he was a painter. He and his family lived at 3740 30th Avenue in south Minneapolis.
He died at City Hospital, cause of death was a railroad accident. He was “run down” by a Soo Line passenger train on the evening of September 28th at the crossing at 8th Street and 17th Avenue. He was living with her daughter and her family at 3740 30th Avenue S. Both of his legs were crushed and had to be amputated.
