As with his brother James, his official records show him as born one year earlier than the Minnesota Birth Records. His obit in the Coos Bay, Oregon, newspaper (The World, April 18, 2001) shows his birth date as October 19, 1939. Walter’s obit says he was raised by his grandparents, Oscar and Clare Johnson, in Mahnomen, Minnesota, from the age of nine months. After his grandfather died in 1955, he came to Oregon to live with his brother William in Gold Beach.
