- In the 1880 census, William and his wife and daughters lived in Rochester, New York. (They are indexed as Fortur.) William is a house and sign painter.
In the 1895 state census, are recorded twice. In both entries, they live at 511 4th Avenue SE in Minneapolis. In one, only the three youngest children are still at home, in the other, Nellie M, 17, is also living at home. William is a sign painter.
In the 1900 census, he and his wife and children lived in north Minneapolis. William was a sign painter.
In the 1905 state census, William lived with his wife Mary E and their children Anna M and Henry E in Minneapolis at 2435 16th Avenue S. William is a sign painter. Anna seems to be an actress and Henry a jeweler.
In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he is likely the William Fortier living at 2435 16th Avenue S. He was a partner with Charles H Adams in a sign company that did business from 216 Washington Avenue N.
In the 1910 census, he and Mary E, ages 53 and 51 respectively, live in Minneapolis. They have been married for 35 years.
He lived and died at Island Park, Mound. He was a retired sign painter when he died of a stroke. His father was William Fortier.
