Notes |
- The informant for her death certificate was Mrs. Henry Thielen of 727 Birch Street in Sauk Centre. The informant did not know who Clara’s parents were. Clara’s usual residence at the time of her death was 323 West Bancroft where she had lived for 32 years.
The Trønderlag’s 2008/2009 Aarbok calls her Clara Rindahl-Peterson, the adopted child of Cornelius Peterson, one of the founding members of the Trønderlag.
If this is so, then in the 1895 Minnesota census, she is the 6 year-old Clara Ness living with Cornelius and Carrie Peterson and family in Fergus Falls Twp, Otter Tail County, Minnesota.
In the 1900 census, she is Clara Petersen, age 12, the adopted daughter of Cornelius and Karen Petersen in Fergus Falls Twp. Both of her parents were born in Norway.
According to the 1905 state census, she had lived in Minnesota and the current enumeration district for her entire life.
In the 1910 census, she is the 21 year-old Clara D Peterson living with her brother Edward’s family in Fergus Falls. Cornelius and Karen are also living with Edward. Clara has no occupation.
In the 1920 census, still as Clara D Peterson, she still lives with Edward and his family in Fergus Falls. Cornelius, now a widower, also lives with Edward. Clara’s occupation is shown as dressmaker for a private family.
In the 1930 census, still as Clara D Peterson, now 41, she still lives with Edward and his family as the household’s housekeeper. Cornelius is no longer living with Ed.
Clara died from the complications of a fall down the basement stairs at the home of her step-daughter, Mrs. Thielen, on November 28, 1963.
One of Clara’s step-brother’s granddaughters remembers: “In the forties I attended Adams elem. school in Fergus Falls, and frequently ate my lunch with ‘Calla’ Bye at noon or spent the night with Ed and Calla. Ed would come home from the grocery store and noon and bring treats from his store; Hershey bars and bananas. I always looked forward to that. Calla loved children and had none of her own. She was a wonderful story teller and would teach us to count in Finnish!”
Pat says that Clara’s biological parents (unmarried) were listed in the First Lutheran Church’s records as Jim Rendal and Anna Ness. Clara was baptized and confirmed at that church, then called the Norwegian Synodical Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. First Lutheran is one block over from Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Oral tradition in the family says that Clara was born north of Underwood, in Otter Tail County, and was left on Cornelius and Karen’s doorstep.
