- James Milton Saxhaug, 86, of Iron, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
Jim was born to Edward and Nan Saxhaug on Dec. 9, 1921, in Forbes. He attended schools in Forbes and Eveleth. In 1942 Jim began four years of service in the U.S. Army. In 1944 he married Gael Grierson of Hibbing, his beloved wife of 51 years.
Upon discharge from the serivce Jim began a 35-year career with the DMIR Railroad, working as a carpenter and supervisor in the bridge and building department. He was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Forbes and Virginia.
Jim's favorite pastimes included fishing, woodworking and carving. He was noted for his beautiful wildlife wood carvings.
"Papa Jim'' especially loved spending time with his great-grandchildren and always had a special place in his heart for them.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy (David) Zini of Maple Lake, Minn.; granddaughters, Julie Zini of Maple Lake and Jill (Paul) Jude of Maple Lake; great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Emily and Jacob; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gael; infant son, Gary; and brothers, Edward and George.
