- Pearl Alma (Brinkman) Loe was born December 2, 1920, to Ross and Alma (Lanes) Brinkman. She grew up on the family farm in Mickinock Township. She attended grade school in Hanson, Pencer and Wannaska Schools. She graduated from Roseau High School in 1940. While in high school and immediately after graduation she worked as a bookkeeper at the Citizens State Bank in Roseau. In 1953 she began as the bookkeeper at the Wannaska Creamery and continued there until its closing. During the two years they lived in Crookston she worked at the Polk County State Bank.
She was united in marriage to Gilbert Sunset Loe on June 21, 1941 at the home of her parents. She and Gilbert lived for 68 years on their farm in Grimstad Township, until her death on September 8th, 2009. They had one daughter, Carol Elaine, born December 6th, 1944.
Pearl was a lifelong member of Riverside Lutheran Church in Wannaska. Her many contributions to the mission of the church included teaching, serving as organist for more than 70 years, and leadership roles in parish activities. Her leadership activities extended beyond parish boundaries to include synodical offices.
She was a leader in the local, national and global work of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, holding offices at all levels and traveling widely to further the goals and aims of the WCTU.
After her retirement she took on a leadership role at the Roseau Senior Citizens’ Center, serving on the Board of Directors and rolling up her sleeves to help turn out the lefse for which the Center is renowned. Her service there led to an active role in programs sponsored by Lutheran Social Services. Her outreach to the community included leading weekly Bible studies and participating in worship services for residents of local nursing homes. She maintained an active life, committed to serving others, until ill health forced her to limit her activities.
Pearl Loe passed away on Tuesday, September 8, at LifeCare Medical Center in Roseau. She was 88 years old.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Gilbert, her daughter Carol and son-in-law Selmer Moen of Minot, ND, granddaughter Kari Moen and fiancée Jim Tengesdal of Minot, ND, grandson Selmer John Moen (Becky) of Eden Prairie, MN and great-grandchildren Harrison and Josephine Moen of Eden Prairie, brother Robert (Dorothy) of Wannaska, sister Carol Lindstrom of Braham, MN, aunt Lorraine Backlund of Roseau, MN, uncle Ernest (Alpha) Lanes of Wannaska. Her sister-in-law Bernice Loe of Fargo, ND, brother-in-law Walter (Melva) Loe of Roseau, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers-in-law Wilbur Lindstrom and Manfred Loe as well as a nephew, Michael M. Loe.
A funeral service for Pearl Loe of Wannaska will be held on Saturday, September 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside Lutheran Church in Wannaska. Visitation will be held at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau from 5-7 p.m. on Friday with a devotional service at 7:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday.
Memorials are preferred to the Pearl Loe Organ Fund at Riverside Lutheran Church in Wannaska.
