Notes |
- Marie married her first cousin.
Oleanna Johannesdatter, 43, and her four children (Jon Martinussen, 11, Marie Martinussdatter, 7, Anna Martinussdatter, 9, and Hans Martinussen, 5) left Norway on 5 April 1882 on the feeder ship Tasso to Hull, England. Their destination was Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
Her death certificate, for which the informant was her son Robert, says that she was born in Trondheim.
Living in Biwabik, MN, at the time of Martin Bye’s death in 1932 and Anna Bye Everson's death in 1949. Living in Biwabik at the time of the 1920 census (January 20th). All five children were living at home at that time.
According to Edna Cartwright, she was 9 when the family emigrated and 15 when her mother died. These dates are only slightly inconsistent with other information. According to the 1920 census, Marie immigrated in 1883 and was naturalized as a citizen in 1892.
The 1890-91 Duluth directory lists Marie as Mary. Mary Bye is shown as "domestic, John Orfald" and living in West Duluth.
Lived with Edna in her later years and "was well into her '90s" when she died (according to Lil).
Marie was referred to as Mary by many in the family.
An article in the August 11, 1918, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune, datelined Biwabik, was headlined “Biwabik Woman and Daughter Found in Woods Following Prolonged Search.” Marie and one one of her daughters became lost picking blueberries. The Home guard and firemen found them “a few miles from the town of McKinley, wandering helplessly about the woods.” They had been lost for two days and a night.
The Thursday, October 18, 1945, edition of the Brainerd newspaper noted that “Mrs. J.B. Orfald, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cartwright and daughter, Linda, of Biwabik visited with the John Eversons Tuesday.”
The Thursday, August 21, 1947, edition of the Brainerd newspaper noted that “Mr. and Mrs. Henry Norton of Chicago, Mrs. Arthur Cartwright and Mrs. J. B. Orfold of Biwabik visited with Mrs. Anne Everson and John Everson on Thursday.”
Minnesota death certificate shows the date of death as June 19, 1966 in St. Louis County (Minnesota Death Certificate ID# 1966-MN-015728). The SSDI shows her date of death as August 15, 1966, with the indication “verified with family.”
Another Marie Orfald died in St. Louis County on May 25, 1938. (Death Cert # 1938-MN-013506)
From her obituary in the Biwabik newspaper:

She was born in Trondheim, Norway on April 28, 1873.
She was a member of the Biwabik Community United Church of Christ.

Orfald of Virginia, and five daughters: Mrs. Jennie Goodman, Biwabik, Mrs. Myrtle Lehto, Chicago, Mrs. Harry (Ruth) Saxhaug, Virginia, Mrs. Mabel Norton, Chicago, and Mrs. Arthur (Edna) Cartwright, Biwabik. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
Her pallbearers were Vernon Saxhaug, Virginia, Richard Dane, Lakeland, Daniel Norton, Chicago, and Robert, John, and Rickey Goodman, all of Biwabik.
