In the 1930 census, she was Ester Anderson, a servant for a private family living in Englewood, New Jersey. In the 1940 census, she and her family lived on East 174th Street in the Bronx. Egon and Esther each had had one year of high school. He was usually a waiter at a hotel restaurant. He had earned $1200 in 1939 but he was unemployed and not looking for work at the time of the census. Her address at the time that Naomi made her trips to Sweden was c/o Robert Schnepf, 58 Hastings Road, Berkeley Heights, N.J.
