Notes |
- She grew up in or near Bevier, Missouri, and graduated from Bevier High School with its class of 1949. In September of 1949 she entered nurses’ training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kansas City.
Her engagement to Eivind Bye was announced in the 30 July 1951 edition of the Macon Chronicle-Herald by her mother, Mrs. Henry Peal of Odessa, Missouri. The announcement said that Miss Wolff made her home with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Carr, for several years. She had attended St. Theresa’s College in Kansas City and, at the time of her engagement, was a nurse at the Kirksville College of Osteopathy Hospital where her husband-to-be was a student at Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery. The wedding party would include the bride’s sisters, Miss Laura Wolff and Bevier and Miss Daneen Wolff of Odessa, and her brother, Roy Wolff of Odessa.
Her name is spelled Wolff on their marriage licenses. Both of them were “of Kirksville” at the time of their marriage, which was conducted by a Roman Catholic priest, Rev. Cumming, of Mary Immaculate Church. She was given in marriage by her uncle, Roy P. Carr of Bevier. We can infer that the second ceremony was considered necessary, perhaps insisted upon by the bride or by the bride’s parents, because the original Minnesota marriage was very likely in a Lutheran church and was not a Roman Catholic ceremony.
In an announcement of her first child’s birth, she was described as having made her home with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Carr, now of Joliet, Illinois, who lived at and operated “Hilltop House.”
She may have had a child with Eivind in 1958 who later died as an infant or young child.
She is probably not the mother of all of Eivind’s daughters and is probably not the mother of any of the daughters of Eivind Gardner Bye who are listed in his obituary.
The 1940 census has a 10 year-old Jennie Lee Wolf, born in Illinois, living in St. Louis as “lodger’s daughter” although the census entry is a correction so it’s not clear who the parent is. In 1935, she had lived in Jefferson in Cole County, Missouri. Further examination of the census record uncovers the “lodger” as Alexander Wolf,a divorced man living at 3741 Grandel Square in a lodging house. Jennie is listed with all three of her siblings, all of whom, including Jennie, are “absent.” Thus it appears that Alexander Wolff and his wife divorced not long before the census-takers came around and where and with whom their children would live had not yet been resolved.
In the Social Security Applications and Claims Index, her parents were Alexander C Wolff and Iola A Cooley. She changed her name to Jennie Lee Dickinson, in the Social Security records, in May of 1970.
