- OBITUARY: Mrs. Mary Jane Fleming, wife of John Fleming passed away at the family home in Hicks Valley on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1913.
Mrs. Fleming's illness has been of long duration, dating back about three years. Up until the last she had been a patient sufferer and ever mindful of the comfort and welfare of others, hers has been a life worth living. As long as health permitted her duties were performed. Her living motto was, "Do your Duty"; her Christian and upright characteristics were manifest by her ever willingness to help the cause of our Master and the daily life she lived. Anyone following lawful or legal occupations were never turned from her door. She stood for honesty, truthfulness, brotherly love and home companionship. Her life was spent for the family, and having a large family, much time was necessitated for home life and to this she ever was true.
Only her son Milton, her husband and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mabel Fleming, who had been in attendance upon her, were with her at the end of life's journey. Even in her almost helpful condition she had provided and even already given some gifts for all her children and grandchildren. This is only an exemplification of how she always thought of others and seldom of self.
Funeral services were held at the home on Saturday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. G.E. Meierbachtol, pastor of the M.E. Church at Pepin, conducting the services. The remains were laid at rest in Oakwood cemetery.
Mary Jane (Littell) Fleming was born at Presque Isle, Michigan, September 26, 1848. While a child her days were spent on the border of Lake Michigan. When about eight years of age, the family emigrated to Alma, Wis. Here her childhood days were spent until August 21, 1862, when she became united in marriage with John Fleming of this place. To this union were born ten children of which 8, and 2 of her brothers survive to mourn her loss. The children who survive are: Wm. H of Palouse, Wash., Milton El, Clara J. Wheeler, Eugene Burton, all of Pepin, E. May Fuller of Grand Rapids, Wis., Truman and Arminda I Barnes of Glenwood, Wis. And Sherman A. of Pepin. Two sons preceeded their mother in death: John Franklin died in 1867 and James C. in 1908. The two brothers are John P. Littell of Estherville, Iowa, and Charles Littell of Mondovi, Washington.
