In the 1920 census, she lived in Minneapolis as a lodger in a large apartment building or dormitory on 10th Street South. She was a dental hygienist. In the 1930 census, Kate and Erna MacKaben are lodgers living together in a rented apartment on Hauser Boulevard in Los Angeles. Kate is a hygienist for a dentist. Erna is a stenographer for a fruit shipping company. In the 1940 census, she and her partner Erna MacKaben, 36, born in Illinois, live in Alhambra, California. Kate has a seventh-grade education and has no occupation and does housework. Erna is a secretary for fruit shippers. Erna owns their house at 1104 South Monterey Street, the same house both women lived in five years earlier, and it’s worth $6000. Erna is a high school graduate. Although the 1930 and 1940 censuses show Erna as born in Illinois, the California Death Index shows her as born in Minnesota on 25 Mar 1904 to a woman whose maiden name was Benicke. Erna’s full name, according to that death index, was Erna Mickeyamiela Mackaben. She died in San Bernardino County on 9 Jul 1997. Actually, Erna was born in Illinois but her family was living in Minnesota by the time of the 1910 census. Erna also had a brother, Ernest, who died in California and was born in Minnesota. In the 1926 Minneapolis city directory, Erna was a stenographer for General Motors Acceptance Corp and lived at 52 South 10th.
