- In the 1895 state census, Fredrik Torvik, 22, is a painter lodging with the Andrew Aaby family in Lee, Norman County, Minnesota. He had been in the U.S. for four years and three months.
In the 1900 U. S. Census, he was Frederick Torvik, 27, born Oct 1872, a single man, a painter, who was living with a family on the “county poor farms” in Fergus Falls Twp, Otter Tail County.
An article in the Duluth News-Tribune, dated November 6, 1912, is headlined Fergus Falls has a Sensation Suit. Datelined Fergus Falls, November 5th: A sensational damage suit, involving local men has been filed in the district court here. Frederick Torvik and Andrew E Bye have been in partnership as Torvik & Bye, and had some difficulty in connection with firm matters. The allegations are to the effect that Torvik went to the home of Mr. Bye and assaulted him and his wife. Mr. Bye asks $5,035 damages and Mrs. Bye $7,000.
In the summer of 1937, Fred took a trip back to Norway. He returned to the United States on the S.S. Stavangerfjord which sailed from Oslo on August 10th and arrived at New York on August 20, 1937. The ship’s manifest notes that Fred had been naturalized as U.S. citizen in Fergus Falls on February 5, 1900. At the time of his trip, he gave his address in Fergus Falls as 715 Court Street.
In the 1939/40 Fergus Falls city directory, he is a painter and lives at 715 Court Street. His telephone number is 1150R. Same in the 1941/42 Fergus Falls city directory.
In the 1940 census, Fred, Olga, Edwin, and Harriette live at 715 Court Street. Fred and Edwin are decorators at a paint shop.
His daughter Olga of 715 South Court was the informant for his death certificate. She had no idea who Fred’s parents were. Fred was a painter and paper hanger who died from pneumonia brought on by influenza.
