- According to a couple of family trees in the Ancestry World Tree project, Robert Hans Claassen’s parents were Gerhard and Emelie Dyck Claassen, both born in Germany.
He may be the Robert H Claassen, b. 1891 or 1892, who was living in Alberta in the 1901 Canada census and the 1905 provincial census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
In the 1910 census, Robert H. Claassen, 23, and his wife Leona, 22, live in Spokane, Washington. They had been married for 6 years, the first marriage for each. He was born in Washington and his parents in Germany. She was born in Wisconsin and her parents in North Dakota. Robert was a portrait photographer. No children were living with them.
Robert Claassen registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Minneapolis. At that time he was married, with two children, and living at 3321 Grand Avenue. He was born in Seattle and was a “seedsman” for Northrup King & Co. in Minneapolis. He was tall and of medium build with brown eyes and brown hair.
Robert, Leona, and Leona’s two children lived at 5723 Lyndale Ave. S. in Richfield in the 1920 census (not far from the Bachmans’ truck farm). Robert’s parents were born in Germany. Robert was a mechanic at an automobile factory.
In the 1924 Minneapolis city directory, he was a clerk for A E Knudson. He lived at 1611 E 22nd. His stepson Marion L Claassen lived at that same address.
In the 1927 Minneapolis city directory, Marion and his father and two other men (Frank West and Albert Besser) had a syrup manufacturing business called Claassen & West at 1414 E Hennepin. Robert and Marion lived at 353 N E Garfield.
In the 1928 Minneapolis city directory, Robert was a grocer at 3508 Nicollet Avenue S. He lived at 2833 Fremont Avenue S, the same address as his stepson Marion.
In the 1929 directory, Robert lives at 2833 Fremont Ave S, the same address as his stepson Marion.
In the 1930 census, Robert, Leona, Marion, and someone’s aunt named Hattie Trump, a 66 year-old married woman, lived at 2825 Fremont Avenue S. Robert is a commercial photographer, Marion is a candy maker.
In the 1932 Minneapolis city directory, Marion, his mother, and his stepfather lived at 3845 35th Avenue S. Marion was a serviceman for Diamond Tire Sales Co. Robert was a driver.
Robert is not listed in the 1936 Minneapolis city directory.
In the 1937 Minneapolis city directory, Robert is a salesman. He lives at 2631 Grand Avenue.
In the 1940 census, he and Leona lived in Minneapolis. He was the proprietor of a bakery shop. He had an eighth-grade education, Leona a seventh-grade education. They had three lodgers living with them at 4131 2nd Avenue. This was a house they owned worth $3000. They had lived at a different address in 1935.
The informant for his death certificate was the mortuary. His wife was Edith. He lived at 3525 3rd Avenue South. He had been a salesman of photo supplies. He died from a massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage brought on by esophogeal cancer. He had had an operation on August 27, 1958, where they had discovered the inoperable cancer.
