- He enlisted in the Army Air Corps for World War II as Carl Volgren on 26 June 1941 in Illinois. He was born in 1913 in Wisconsin. He was single, without dependents, was an automobile serviceman in civilian life and had a grammar school education. As Staff Sergeant Carl Volgren, he arrived back in the U.S. in New York on June 29, 1945, aboard the Queen Elizabeth.
Carl and Kathryn had four children, two boys and two girls.
