Notes |
- In the 1900 census, she may be the Marit Olsen, b. 1874, working as a maid on the Rabben farm in Nord-Aurdal.
Referred to as Marin O, age 29, on Theodore’s birth certificate.
Died of typhoid fever at Norwegian Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis.
Her birth record in the parish records shows her as Marit, parents Ole Olsen and Barbro Helgesdatter Næseiet.
According to her death certificate, her father was Ole Olsen, her mother was Barbra Helgesen. The East Christiania church record of her marriage to Ole also shows that Mary’s mother was Barbro Helgeson. (Other sources suggest her mother was Kari Carlsdatter or at least that Ole O. Ness was married to Kari Carlsdatter at some point.)
Using the parents’ names on her death certificate, and the suggestion that her possible relative Selma was born in Aurdal, it’s very likely that Mary Ness is Marit Olsdatter, born in 1874 in Svennes and living on the Kviteberg farm in Nord-Aurdal in the 1875 Norwegian census. That’s what is assumed here.
Mary was buried in Layman’s Cemetery. This is the cemetery on the northeast corner of Lake Street and Cedar Avenue. It is the oldest cemetery in Minneapolis and is now called the Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery. Minneapolis’s poorest citzens were buried in unmarked mass graves in Section H.
