- His obit in the FFDJ:
The Rev. Everald H. Strom, 87, of Fergus Falls, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at Broen Memorial Home.
Everald was born June 7, 1921, in Wahpeton, N.D., to the Rev. Erwin and Bertha (Hanson) Strom. Everald spent his formative years in several Midwestern communities; Grand Forks, N.D., Eau Claire, Wis., and Fergus Falls, as his father served various congregations within the Church of the Lutheran Brethren and also taught at the Lutheran Brethren Schools.
Everald graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, along with his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Kilde, in 1938. Everald continued his education at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, where he completed his undergraduate degree in 1942.
In 1944, Everald graduated from the Lutheran Brethren Seminary with a Master of Divinity Degree. Throughout his professional life, Everald continued to pursue postgraduate education and training at a variety of institutions throughout the country: New York University, Wagner College (Staten Island, N.Y.) and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
On June 5, 1943, Everald married Sylvia Kilde in the gymnasium at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.
Two children were born while Everald and Sylvia lived in Minneapolis: Edward in 1950, and David in 1955.
From 1944-1968, Everald and Sylvia served Lutheran Brethren congregations in Staten Island, N.Y., Minneapolis, Scarsdale, N.Y., and Moorhead.
In June of 1968, Everald was elected to serve as President of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren, a position he was elected to five more times before his retirement in 1986.
Following his retirement, Everald served as Chaplain/Director of the Tuscarora Resource Center until 1989, when at that time, he and Sylvia relocated to the River Oaks Housing Development, west of Fergus Falls.
Throughout his vocational ministry, Everald was involved in many other facets of public ministry, serving as editor of the “Faith and Fellowship” periodical, and on the board of the Lutheran Evangelistic Movement.
Everald will be remembered for his compassion, kindness, loyalty to his family, love for the people in the various congregations that he served, and his support of fellow ministers of the gospel when they needed his counsel and advice. He will also be remembered for his dry sense of humor and his appreciation of others whose sense of humor rivaled and even surpassed his.
Everald is survived by his wife Sylvia; sons, Edward (Louanne) of Moorhead and David (Laurie) of Fergus Falls; his sister June Soholt of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Rachel (Samuel) Bass of Kaukana, Wis.; Erin (Benjamin) Krueger of Appleton, Wis.; Amy Jo (Brent) Greiner of Little Chute, Wis.; and Evan and Katharine Strom of Fergus Falls; five great-grandchildren, Collin, Megan, and Kaelinn Krueger and Iris and Ian Bass.
