9013 He was living with his parents in Verdal in the 1910 census. His occupation was skoleelev (pupil). WHIST, Hans (I16923)

9014 He was living with his uncle, Theodor Johnson, in Fergus Falls in the 1900 U.S. census, employed as an “agent for cigars.” That census claims he came to the U.S. in 1880. As Fridthjof, or any variation, he doesn’t appear in any other U.S. censuses. However, a 33 year-old Fred Whist, born in Norway is recorded in Los Angeles in the 1910 census. Fred is a restaurant waiter and is married to Hilma, age 27, born in Sweden. That Fred and Hilma, now with a daughter Thelma, are still in Los Angeles County in the 1920 census. Fred is now 45, works as a salesman for a produce company, and claims to have come to the U.S. in 1890. By the 1930 census, Hilma, now as Helena, is a widow, still in Los Angeles. Hilma died in Los Angeles in 1959. Her daughter Thelma (born Edith) died in Los Angeles as Thelma Niederwerfer in 1993. Hilma’s maiden name is Andersen in Thelma’s death record; Hilma’s maiden name is Olson on Thelma/Edith’s birth record.

A 21 year-old “Axel” Whist was a land office clerk in St. Paul in the 1895 Minnesota state census. That Axel had been in Minnesota for two years.
WHIST, Fridthjof Oscar (I18550)

9017 He was named after his half-brother who was born and died in 1849. HAMRE, Helge Amundsen (Henry) (I38260)

9018 He was naturalized as a citizen in Oshkosh on September 24, 1868.

In the 1870 census, he was a blacksmith in Neenah. His wife was Anna, age 25, and they had two children, Caroline and John, and a domestic servant named Christiansen, age 27, born in Norway.

In the 1880 census, he was a 42 year-old blacksmith in Neenah. His wife was Oliva, 34 (Ole’s 2nd wife) and their children were John 12, Ellisa, 9, Lena, 8, Hilda, 5, and Olif, 1. The first three childen, as well as the dead Caroline, were from Ole’s first wife, Anne.

He married Olava Arenson in November of 1874 and had four children with her: Hilda, Olaf, Dorthea, and Emma.

His partnership with Johnson in their blacksmith firm Johnson & Myhre was dissolved June 12, 1891, with Myhre continuing the business.

His will gave each of his six children $100 with the remainder of the property, including the homestead, going to his wife Alva. The estate was valued at about $5,000. {Ole had seven living children at the time of his death. Perhaps Olaf, who was the executor of Ole’s estate, was compensated differently.}

An article in the Neenah newspaper on his death called him “one more of the old heroes of the civil war,” and “one of Neenah’s highest esteemed and best-known citizens.” He had enlisted in Company G of the 3rd Wisconsin regiment and served throughout the entire war. He served three years on the city council. His health had been poor for some time “with stomach trouble.” He was an earnest worker in the G.A.R.

The obit said that a wife and seven children survived him: Mrs. Madsen of Martelle, Wisconsin, Mrs. C. Thompson of Highwood, Montana, and John, Olaf, Hilda, Emma, and Valbar of Neenah.
MYHRE, Ole Olsen (I41325)

9019 He was Nelse E. Williamson, living with his mother in Amherst village, Portage County, in the 1900 census. He was a bartender. Couldn’t find him in the 1910 or 1920 censuses.

In the 1930 census, he is probably the 64 year-old Nels Williamson living in a boarding house in the village of Amherst. Nels’s occupation seems to be laborer in a pool room.

His obit was in the 29 Aug 1935 edition of the Stevens Point Journal:

Nels Edwin Williamson, 68, a resident of Amherst most of his life, died at 12:45 o’clock Monday morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. Anna Couch, at Amherst. He had been in poor health for the past month but his condition was not serious.

Mr. Williamson was born at Amherst on April 23, 1867, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Boia Williamson. He attended Amherst schools and later worked in logging camps. For several years he resided in Montana. For the past few years he had made his home with his sister, the only remaining relative of his immediate family.

Funeral services were held at 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at his home and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. C. E. Olsen officiated.

Among the relatives from far away who attended the funeral were Byron Couch of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. John Shellhammer and sons of Port Edwards, Mrs. Mary Lyons and Sever Williamson of Wisconsin Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Dillon and Miss June Dillon of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. James Gleason and Miss Margaret Gleason of Fond du Lac.
WILLIAMSON, Nels Edwin (I11642)

9020 He was not listed with his family in the 1880 census. He apparently died before 1871 because that 1880 census includes another son, Syvert, age 9, who was born in Wisconsin. AARLIEN, Syver Nielsen (I34349)
