In the 1940 census, Andrew lived in a house he owned at 4228 30th Avenue South in Minneapolis. He was 68 years old and still worked as a machinist helper for a railroad. Living with him were his wife Marie, 57, born in Sweden, his sons Edwin and William, ages 29 and 26, and his daughter Eleanor, 24. They had all lived in the same house in 1935. Edwin worked for a railroad as a helper in the stores department. William was an assistant purchasing agent for a utility company (most likely Northern States Power, the utility in Minneapolis). Eleanor was a waitress at a tavern.
In the 1930 census, Andrew lived with Marie, Edwin, William, and Eleanor at 4228 30th. He and Marie had married when he was 36 and she was 26. In this census, Marie was born in Norway. Authorities said he was on duty at the time of the early-morning break-in. He was arrested and charged with felonious theft and burglary. He had been a Blaine policeman for 8 years. He resigned from the Blaine police force on the day of his arrest, February 14, 1974.

He was a Captain CE USAR in World War II. “BSM & 2 OLC.” In the headstone application, completed by Mrs. Stanley Dosey, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers, Co. A, 95th Combat Engineers. He had enlisted on 16 Nov 1944 and was discharged on 5 Dec 1945.
The Army enlistment records show that he also enlisted on 2 Nov 1942 in Spokane. He was a carpenter in civilian life.
According to laurelee59: He was drafted as a private, took basic training at Camp White in Oregon, was Shipped to Northern Africa for more training and then on to Italy. He fought with the Combat Engineers in the Po River Valley in Italy. He was decorated three times for heroism; two Bronze stars and the Oak Leaf Cluster. He also got a field commission, promoted from Staff Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant, “pinned” by General Mark Clark. He was discharged after the war was over, but stayed in the reserves and was called back for Korea where he served as a Company Commander and trained his troops for combat.
