8921 He was an albino and was legally blind. He died from Alzheimer’s. He gave $1 million to the University of Minnesota for research into albinism. He received a business degree from the University of Minnesota in 1940 (where he studied with the help of a magnifying glass) and worked in insurance, banking, and real estate. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and also attended the University of Wisconsin.

8923 He was an apprentice barber in La Crosse as of April 10, 1909.

He and his brother Olaf were members of the Norden Band of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse in a 1910 photograph published again in the La Crosse Tribune on 27 Jan 1969. Olaf poses in the photograph with a snare drum, Paul with an English horn.

He registered for the draft on May 28, 1917, in Washington County, Iowa. He was a barber with a wife and two children.

Not found in the 1920 census. We don’t know how or why his marriage to Lucille was dissolved but they appear to have been apart after the birth of Richard.

In February of 1923, he lived at the Oak Forest Sanitarium in La Crosse.

8924 He was an apprentice carpenter in the 1900 census.

In the 1902 Fergus Falls city directory, he lives with his parents and works for the J M Bye and Co.

In the 1905 Fergus Falls directory, she was Miss Hilga L and was employed at the State Hospital.

A 21 year-old Gust Johnson, both parents born in Norway, was listed as a nurse at the state hospital in the 1905 state census.

Cecil Johnson of Pelican Rapids was the informant for his death certificate. Gustaf was a car man for the Great Northern Railway. Gustaf was a widower and his usual residence was 1006 Sheridan Street in Fergus Falls. He died of uremia and kidney failure.

In the 1910 census, he and Helga live in Devils Lake, North Dakota. The couple had been married for 2 years and had had no children. Gust was a tin smith in the “shops.” According to the birth record for Alice, he was a coppersmith.

In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, he and his wife and son lived in Minot, North Dakota. Gust was an air man for the steam railroad.

His obit noted that he was a carman for the Great Northern Railway for 41 years, and a member of the railroad carmens and pensioners association.

8925 He was an assistant cashier at a bank in Lanesboro in Fillmore County in the 1930 census. His second wife seems to have been also named Alice.

He registered for the draft on June 2, 1917, in Amhurst, Fillmore County. He gave his home address as Lanesboro, Minnesota. His occupation was farming and he was employed by his father at the Amhurst Township Mill. He was single and claimed exemption from the draft on the grounds that he was the only child in the family. He was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and of medium build with blue eyes and light brown hair.
