8613 He received a Bachelor of Science degree from School of Forestry at the University of California-Berkeley in 1945. The commentary notes: For many years, Martin was the logging and sawmill superintendent of the White Pine Lumber Co. at Orofino, Idaho. In 1961 he became a lumber sales serviceman for the Potlatch Forests, Inc., at Lewiston, Idaho.

In the 1940 census, he and his wife and two daughters lived in Township 56, Range 17, of St. Louis County. He was a clerk for a forestry project.

According to FS’s United States National Register of Scientific and Technical Personnel Files, Martin lived in Idaho in November of ‘54. He was employed in private industry, had majored in Forestry and Range Science, was a member of the American Biological Society, and was not on active duty in the military.

His obit in the April 25, 1974, edition of Lewiston Tribune:

Martin Joseph Peterka, 909 Cedar Drive, was dead on arrival at St. Joseph’s hospital Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. Peterka, 59, had suffered from a heart ailment.

He was employed in the lumber shipping department of Potlatch Corp.

Born Sept. 23, 1914, at Aurora, Minnesota, he was the son of John and Mary Peterka. He attended high school there and also Eveleth Junior College in Minnesota from 1931 to 1933. He was a student at the University of Minnesota from 1934 to 1935 and received his bachelor of science degree in forestry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1945.

Peterka worked for a time for the U.S. Forest Service while a student in Minnesota and California. He was timber cruiser for the Clearwater Timber Protective Ass’n at Headquarters from 1946 to 1948. Later, he worked as a logging superintendent for the White Pine Lumber Co. at Orofino from 1948 to 1961. He then went to work for Potlatch.

On May 30, 1936, he married Marie E. Goodman at Biwabik, MInnesota. She survives at the family home.

Peterka was a member and past president of the Lewis-Clark Hoo Hoo Club, a forestry industry organization.

Survivors include five daughters, Marjorie A. Gibson of Columbus, Ohio, Judith M. Daniels of Kennewick, Rebecca J. Beck of Orofino, Barbara L. Newbry of Ritzville, and Marie E. Whitehead of Nelson, B.C., three brothers …, five sisters …, and 14 grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Saturday at Brower-Wann’s Chapel of the Flowers with the Rev. D. J. Riffle of St. James Catholic Church officiating.

He served over two years in the Navy and was discharged, as Lt. J.G., in April of 1946. After his wedding, the couple moved to La Grande, Oregon, where he would take a position as a forest ecologist of the Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station.

8617 He registered for the draft as Frank Duffy in Lincoln, Nebraska, on May 25, 1917. At that time he was still single and was employed by the Chicago and Northwest Railroad as a brakeman. He was 21 years old and born in Peru, Nebraska, on June 3, 1895. He was short and of medium build with brown eyes and dark hair.

He registered for the World War II draft in California. He was born in Peru, Nebraska, on June 3, 1895, and lived in Oakland with his wife Elsie. He was employed by the Western Pacific Railroad.

In the 1930 census, he was married to Iva and the family lived in Kansas City. Francis was a laborer doing odd jobs. Iva was not the mother of the three sons, Arthur, Henry, and James.

In the 1940 census, he was married to Elsie Jane and the family lived in Joplin, Missouri. Francis was a switchman. Francis’s 3 boys by his first wife were in the household. They had all lived in Crawford County, Kansas, in 1935. Everyone in the household had gone to school through 7th grade.

8618 He registered for the draft as Fred J Feldmann in Kerkhoven Twp on June 5, 1917. He was single and employed a farmer by Jack Feldmann, probably his father. He was born in Argyle, Wisconsin, on December 25. He was tall and of medium build with brown eyes and black hair.

In the 1930 census, he was a restaurant worker in Madison. Living with the family at the time were Cora’s brothers, Olney and Clayton.

According to that census, Fred’s parents were born in Switzerland.

In the 1937 Madison city directory, he works for the Red & White System. He and Cora live at 2017 Jenifer.

In the 1940 census, he and Cora and Carol live at 918 Waban in Madison. He’s a restaurant manager.

In the 1943 directory, he and Cora live at 918 S Wauban Hill and he’s a manager for the Red & White System. 
FELDMANN, Fred J (I18215)
 
8619 He registered for the draft as John Hagbart Tollefson in Deerwood Twp on June 5, 1917. At that time he was single and working on his father’s farm. He was tall and of medium build with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

He was an auto mechanic for an automobile company in the 1930 census. He had come to the U.S. in 1900.

In the 1931 Minneapolis city directory, the last one with an entry for him, he and his wife Josephine (who may be Gyda) live at 4409 17th Avenue S. John works for North Side Motor Company.

He doesn’t seem to be living in Minnesota at the time of the 1940 census.
