He is probably the 9 year-old Carl Peter Pedersen living on the Storøen farm in Værdalens in the 1865 census. His parents are Peder Hanssen, 63, and Marit Andersdatter, 53.
The name on his confirmation entry in the church book is Carl Bÿvald and his place of birth is also shown as Bÿvald.
He emigrated to the U.S. in March of 1880 as 23 year-old Karl Pedersen By. The Trondheim departures show 22 year-old Karl P. By leaving on the feeder ship Tasso on April 1st with his destination Toronto, Canada.
It is possible that he is the Carl Bye, a single farmer, living next door to Henry H. Bye in North Dakota in the 1900 census. That Carl, however, came to the U.S. in 1878 and was born in October of 1859 according to the census entry.
In the 1903 Fergus Falls city directory, he boarded with Henry Bye’s family at 702 Cascade Street S.
In the 1905 and 1907 Fergus Falls city directories, he still boards with Henry H Bye’s family at 702 Cascade Street.
In the 1909 directory, he is an employee of International Harvester and boards at 212 Alcott Avenue E.
In the 1911 directory, he is still an employee of International Harvester and boards at 401 Broadway.
As Carl P. Bye, he was one of the charter members of Trønderlag of America in 1908. This was (and still is) the bygdelag for emigrants and their descendants from the Trøndelag region of Norway. Carl P. Bye, of Fergus Falls and from Vårdalen, was listed in the Trønderlaget’s 1910 yearbook. In that yearbook, Carl P. is shown as having emigrated to the U.S. in 1880.
The Trønderlag Centennial book says that he emigrated to Toronto on April 1, 1880.
He applied for a U.S. passport in Fergus Falls on August 23, 1909, August 3, 1912, and August 3, 1914. He claimed to have been born in Norway on 12 Nov 1857 and emigrated to the U.S. aboard the Peruvian in April of 1880. He was naturalized as a citizen by the district court of Sargent County, North Dakota, on December 3, 1890. He claimed his permanent residence as Fergus Falls and his occupation as mechanic or machinist. He was described as 5 feet, 11.5 inches tall, with a “round, full” forehead and “full” face. His eyes were hazel and his nose “aquiline.” His mouth was medium, his chin firm, his complexion fair, and his hair light brown and grey.
He made several trips - probably to Norway but apparently to other places also - in the period between 1908 and 1914. The New York passenger lists show the following arrivals for him:
March 20, 1908, aboard the S.S. Adriatic arriving from Liverpool,
February 6, 1909, aboard the S.S. Campania arriving from Liverpool,
February 15, 1910, aboard the S.S. Baltic arriving from Liverpool,
February 19, 1912, aboard the S.S. Carmania arriving from Liverpool,
February 7, 1913, aboard the S.S. Oceanic arriving from Southampton,
January 5, 1914, aboard the S.S. Vasari arriving from Buenos Aires.
The Trønderlag Centennial book says that he was employed by “Harvester Company” in Argentina which probably explains some or all of those trips as well as, perhaps, his absence from the 1910 census.
He is probably the Carl P. Bye in the 1920 census who is a single 63 year-old man, who emigrated in 1880 from Norway, and who was then employed as a nurse at the Fergus Falls State Hospital for the Insane.
According to his death certificate he died at the state hospital where he was or had been a nurse. He died of angina pectoris (probably a heart attack). He was unmarried.
He has a square and compass symbol on his gravestone indicating that he was a member of the Freemasons. | BYE, Carl Peter (I8515)
