8091 He either abandoned or divorced his wife and mother of his son.

May be the person shown as Joseph Ellingboe, born Feb 1876 in Wisconsin in the 1900 census. The same person may be Joseph Elingbow, b. June 1875 in Wisconsin, living as a boarder in Oak Creek in the 1900 census. That 2nd Joseph is a core maker, the same occupation as the 1st Joseph. However, this 2nd Joseph had both parents born in Germany.

In the 1892 Milwaukee city directory, he is a coremaker living at his father’s address, 154 S Bay.

His entry in the 1910 census also shows both of his parents as born in Germany. In that census, he is a 34 year-old single man living in Bradford, Pennsylvania (McKean County). His name is written and indexed as Joseph Ellinbboe. He works as a core maker in a foundry.

In the 1916 city directory for Tonawanda, New York, he is a coremaker living at 49 William.

In the 1917 and 1918 city directories for Lockport, New York, he is a coremaker living at the Niagara Hotel.

He registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Lockport, Niagara County, New York where he was a moulder in a foundry and lived at the Niagara Hotel. He gave his nearest relative as Clara Ellingboe of 154 South Bay in Milwaukee. He was described as tall and of medium build with blue eyes and medium hair.

In the 1920 census he was still living at the Hotel Niagara in Lockport, N.Y. He was a moulder in a foundry. His birthplace and the birthplace of his parents is New York.

In the 1930 census he is was still living at the Niagara Hotel. He was core maker in a foundry.

In the 1935 and 1937 and 1938 city directories for Lockport he is a resident of the Niagara Hotel.

In the 1940 census, he is a lodger in the Niagara Hotel in Lockport, New York. He is 64, single, and had had a fourth-grade education. He had no occupation.

In the 1952 Lockport city directory, he lived at 54 Niagara.

He shares a cemetery gravestone with his sister Louise.
ELLINGBOE, Joseph Gilbert (I4572)

8092 He either sold or gave part of his land for what came to be known as the Ole Torger School south of Viroqua.

In the 1880 census, he and his family lived in Franklin Twp.
TORGER, Ole (I17256)

8093 He emigrated from Kristiansund on 28 March 1900 on a Cunard ship, with permission. He arrived in the U.S. at Portland, Maine, as “Karl Jange”, 24 year-old laborer, on April 16, 1900, aboard the S.S. Tunisian. His destination was his cousin, E. Gustad of Aitkin, Minnesota, who paid for his passage.

He is the “Charles”, “brother”, living with Edward and Elise Gustad in the 1900 census. That “Charles”, however, was shown as born in March of 1875. The name confusion may be because Karl, despite his Junge surname, was also a Gustad. He had been born on, and lived on, the Gustad farm according to his confirmation record.

He registered for the draft in Superior on September 12, 1918, as Charly Young. He was born on 30 July 1875. He was a ship builder with Superior Ship Building Co. He lived at 1208 N 7th Street in Superior and gave his nearest relative as Enger Young, also of that address. He was of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair.

He (as Charles Young) and his family live in Superior in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. Charles is a laborer in the shipyards.

In the 1930 census, he is probably the Charles Young, age 45 (sic), who is living in Superior with his 13 year-old son or grandson, also named Charles Young. The older Charles was born in Norway, came to the U.S. in 1900, and was a laborer for the railroad. He was a widower. The younger Charles, and his parents, had been born in Wisconsin. The younger Charles may be indicated as Charles Jr and he may also be indicated as adopted.

In the 1940 census, he is a 64 year-old widower living in a boarding house in Superior. He works for a shipyard.

He is probably the Charles Young, age 87, who died in Superior in Douglas County on 23 May 1962.

The U.S. Public Records Index, Vol. 1, shows him and Mildred living in Portage, Wisconsin, as of 1984.
