Thompson, Duane E. age 86, of Bloomington, Minnesota, formerly of Clarissa, died on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at his home. Interment is at the church cemetery. Full military honors accorded by the Minnesota Honor Guard and the Parkers Prairie American Legion Post #219.

Duane Elmer was born on July 25, 1932, to Elmer and Emma (Volenec) Thompson on the family farm near Browerville. He was baptized on December 1, 1932 and confirmed on October 16, 1949, at Bethel Church near Clarissa. Duane attended District #123 Country School through the eighth grade. Following his education, he started working for Swift & Co. in South St. Paul. Duane was united in marriage to Eleanor Hedlund on January 31, 1953, at Esther Lutheran Church in Eastern Township. Shortly after their wedding, Duane was stationed in Japan while he served in the United States Army from March 13, 1953 until his honorable discharge in February of 1955. He returned home and went back to work at Swift & Co, until 1967. Duane then began working for the Bloomington School System as a custodian and bus driver before eventually becoming the Chief Engineer. Duane retired in 1994. He was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Bloomington and former member of Esther Lutheran Church. Duane also was part of the camping group called the Rochester Roamers. He enjoyed working, traveling and camping. Duane especially loved taking trips with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; an infant son; sister, Evelyn Sada; and two brothers, Loyd Thompson and Donald Thompson.

Duane is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor; two sons, Kevin (Mary) Thompson of River Bank, California and Keith (Lois) Thompson of Bloomington; daughter, Karla (Donny) Kalpin of Leaf Valley; two brothers, Gary (Kathy) Thompson of Eagle Bend and LeRoy Thompson of Rogers; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In the 1930 census, he and his wife live in Sioux City. He is William L Short, age 57, born in India to parents born in Scotland. His wife Emma is age 47, born in Iowa to parents born in Norway. He is a salesman of real estate. Their household includes three roomers.

A William Henry Short was born in Bjooj, Bombay, India, on 26 Aug 1862, to Alexander Young Short and Flora Lucy.

According to the 1956 Minneapolis city directory, he was an examiner for the state. He and Esther lived at 2912 42nd Avenue S.

Flaten, Leo G. age 97, of Minneapolis died Friday, August 24, 2018. He was born at the family farm on Lake Elizabeth in Atwater, MN on March 9, 1921 and spent his early childhood years in Willmar and Atwater, MN. During WWII he served in the Army of the United States from August 26, 1942 through December 1, 1946 spending 2 1/2 years in England and France. Following discharge, he attended Macalester College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota where he received his B.S. degree in Economics in March, 1949. He was employed for 36 years by the Commerce Department of the State of Minnesota, completing his career in the position of Chief Examiner. He was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1950. He enjoyed reading, especially history books and researching family genealogy with his niece, Jane. He lived in his home until the time of his death. He passed into eternity peacefully in the Emergency Room of Fairview Southdale Hospital surrounded by his family. Leo is survived by his daughter, Janet (Thomas) Sass, son, David Flaten and grandchildren, Jonathan (Emily) Sass, Laura Sass and Christina (Ethan) Ongstad and other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 720 13th Avenue South in Minneapolis Thursday, August 30th at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Preceded in death by wife, Esther; parents Balder and A. Dorothy Flaten, brothers, William, Bernard, Calvin, Elroy, Raymond, Edmund, Nord, Gerald; sisters, Helen, Ann and Pearl.

Five years earlier, Richard had lived in Gilbert, St. Louis County, Minnesota, Frances had lived in Bemidji, and their oldest child, Roberta, age 6, born in Minnesota, had lived in Van Nuys, California. Richard was a mechanic for Lockheed.

He and his family lived in Biwabik in the 1950 census. He was a catskinner in an iron mine.

Age 88 Died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 26th, 2013. Preceded in death by parents Robert and Florence and brother Ken. Survived by his loving wife of 65 years Hazel (Hodos); children Tom (Sue), Dave (Lynn), Nancy Jacobson (Kim); grandchildren Elise, Jackie, Mindi, Jenell, step grandchild Jolene and great grandchild Linnea. Dick was a story teller extraordinaire. His stories were often based on his experiences as a US Marine in WW2, a career in banking extending for over 40 years, his many friends (especially the gang from Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church), his travels, his faith and of course his family. The family wishes to thank the VA hospital in St. Cloud for the compassionate, professional care Dick received. A memorial service will be held at Elim Lutheran Church, 20971 Olinda Trail N., Scandia on Wednesday, October 30th at 1PM, with a visitation one hour prior. Memorials preferred to Elim Lutheran Church, Gammelgarden or the Alzheimer's Research Center of Saint Paul.

In the 1940 census, he and his daughter lived with his father and sister at 715 Court Street. He was a decorator at a paint shop.

At the time of his death he lived at 715 South Court in Fergus Falls and was married to Lenore Olson Torvik. The informant for the information on his death certificate was Mrs. Julian Johnson of Fergus Falls. He died of colon cancer.
