According to his obit in the Star on 20 Aug 1964, he lived at 3544 Columbus in south Minneapolis and died at the age of 70. His wife was Myrtle. He had a son Reuben and two daughters: Mrs. Donald (Lois) Cottle of Minneapolis and Mrs. Lorwin (Ruth Ann) Ludtke of St. Paul. He had one step-daughter, Mrs. Leo (Bernice) Gottsleben of Minneapolis and one sister, Mrs. Stanley (Ethel) Welch of Minneapolis. He was to be buried at Lakeside Cemetery, presumably in the Cambridge area.

When he registered for the draft, he was a 33 year-old contractor living in Jasper. He was of medium height and build, had light hair, blue eyes, and signed his name Knute Hellie. His nearest relative was Elisabeth Hellie, his wife.

According to his brother Ole’s obit, Ole and Knute, both carpenters, “built nearly all the country churches in the Jasper and Garretson areas.”

In the 1920 census, he, as Knute Hellie, and Elisebeth and their two children lived in Jasper in Pipestone County, Minnesota. He was a contractor.

In the 1930 census, he is a carpenter and now married to Mabel. He now lives in Rose Dell in Rock County which is the part of the village of Jasper that is in Rock County (with the remainder in Pipestone County).

By 1940, he is living in Eden Twp, Pipestone County. He is a carpenter engaged in building remodeling. His children Kenneth, Jean, and Darlene are living with him. The household also contains Sophie Oyen, a 49 year-old divorcee, housekeeper, and Gust Carlson, 27, a hired man.

He, like his son Kenneth and family, was omitted from the 1950 census.

In the 1920 census, he is manager of county buildings.
