7291 Gerda Qvale, 96, of rural Ray and more recently of the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. at Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Anderson officiating. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the Bethel Home activity room and burial will follow at Rainbow Valley Cemetery, north of Ray.

Gerda was born on the Dalseng Family homestead on Dec. 24, 1915, to Christ and Johanna (Holstad) Dalseng.

She was raised in the Lutheran Faith and with the traditions of the family farm and educated at the Rainbow Valley School and later graduated from Wildrose High School in 1933. She worked for a time as a young woman in Williston and was united in marriage to Arthur M. Qvale at the Lars Dahl home on Nov. 9, 1944.

The newlywed couple settled on the Qvale place in New Home Township in Williams County where they raised their three sons. Together they farmed and raised small grains and cattle.

Gerda was happy being a homemaker and she enjoyed all that the farm life had to offer.

Besides caring for her home, she enjoyed raising a garden and canning its goods.

She enjoyed spending time devoted to the Church of Rainbow Valley and its entire works.

She remained a member all of her life.

Gerda enjoyed all of the activities of her sons and her grandchildren and all that they were involved in; be it school, church or sports.

She is survived by her three sons and their families, Gerald (Marilyn) Qvale of Minot, Sanford (Carol) Qvale of Williston and Leslie (Monica) Qvale, of Larkspur, Colo.; six grandchildren, Brad (Cheri) Qvale, Elise (Dave) Qvale, Jacob (MaKenzie) Feil, Brian (Misty) Qvale, Brent Qvale and Abrianna Qvale; one sister; Margaret Dalseng; and four nieces and their families.

Gerda is also survived by her family of friends and staff at the Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home where she lived these past six years and was so well cared for in the Pine View Manor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur in 1998; brother, Alfred Dalseng; sister, Esther Oase; and most recently a stillborn infant of Jacob and MaKenzie Feil.

Memorials may be shared with the Rainbow Valley Cemetery Fund and to the charity of the donor’s choice.

7293 Gernhild "Gerney" Sylmera Anderson's life spanned nearly a century that was rich in history and relationships. Gerney was a loving daughter, sister, sister-in-law, niece, cousin, wife, devoted mother, homemaker, friend and community volunteer. She was fun, humble, kind, beautiful and was a very generous soul who loved music, her family and life. She lived with the Swedish proverb "ALL THAT IS LOVED IS BEAUTIFUL" painted in large elegant script on her dining room wall.

Gerney was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Kerkhoven, Minn., the daughter of Mabel and Ole Flolo. As a young child, she lived in Sunburg, Minn., and attended a one-room rural school. Her family later moved to Willmar, where she graduated from Willmar High School.

Gerney married Donald Anderson in Willmar in 1937 where they made a home and began raising their family of six children. The family moved to Rochester in 1964. She enjoyed family summers on Green Lake, by Spicer, from 1950 through 2002. Their retirement winters were spent in Rio Verde, Ariz., where her family and friends loved visiting.

Gerney was a member of the Willmar Order of the Eastern Star and served as a Worthy Matron. In Rochester, she volunteered for the Saint Marys Hospital Auxiliary as a Pink Lady.

Gerney died peacefully in Rochester on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, at the age of 98, with family by her side.

Gerney was preceded in death by her mother and father, and stepfather, George Todahl, her brother, Ardell Flolo, her husband, Don Anderson, and her beloved son, Dean.

Gerney is survived by her children, Doug, Mary, Dick, Mark and Kim; and her grandchildren, Christopher, Annika, Misha, Shanti, Mariah, Maxwell, Danielle, Ashley, Andrea, John, Chris, and Allison; and her great-grandchildren, Anya, Adian, Isaiah, Kaela, Gus, Scarlet, Kevin, Cole, Mary Elle and Brooks.

7294 Gertrude is also Cora's cousin but on her father's side.

Arthur Hendrickson and Gertie had three children, according to Cora, before they divorced. (This ignores Joyce.) After Joyce’s institutionalization, Gertrude divorced Arthur and abandoned those three children (ages 2 to 6) to marry a much younger man and move to Duluth. Her daughter Barbara went to live with her father’s mother (Martha Hendrickson). Her son Arthur was taken to live with his Aunt Myrtle. Her two year-old daughter Patricia went to a foster home. Absent explanatory information, this abandonment seems unforgivable. Art Jr. and Patsy were destroyed.

She was Mrs. Robert (Gertrude) Marshall of Newport News, Virginia, at the time of her sister Marion’s death in 1968. She was Mrs. Robert Marshall of St. Cloud at the time of her brother Herbert’s death in 1975. She was Gertrude Marshall of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, at the time of her sister Doris’s death in 1989.
