6430 Esther M. Aspenson, age 72, of Viroqua, passed into God’s loving arms on Thursday evening, March 27, 2008, at her home with her family by her side following a dignified battle with cancer.

Esther was born in Kickapoo Township in Vernon County, on July 23, 1935, to Mabel (Swiggum) and Gerhard Sherry. She graduated from Readstown High School in 1953. She was a lifelong resident of Wisconsin and a very active and admired member of her community. Esther married the love of her life, Virgil Aspenson on July 24, 1954. They were successful business owners in Viroqua for many years. Esther also served as the town clerk for the town of Utica and was appointed to the State Real Estate Board by former Gov. Tony Earl. She had been a dedicated member of the Utica Lutheran Church as well as serving on several committees. She was well-known for her lefse, the best this side of Norway, which was always a hit at the annual lutefisk and lefse dinner. Esther was also a charter member and past president of Viroqua Eagles Aerie No. 2707 Ladies Auxiliary.

Esther is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Karen) Aspenson of Menasha and Kris (Karen) Aspenson of Ferryville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jamie, Eric and Sara Aspenson, Kris II and Katerina Aspenson, Brian and Arthur Rhodes and Luis Aspenson; and one great-granddaughter, Rosary Aspenson. Esther will be greatly missed by her siblings, Kathleen Ranallo of Mequon, Adrian Sherry of Onalaska, Margaret (Keith) Larson of Readstown, Louise (John) Sime of Burlington, Lucille Erickson of Menahga, Minnesota, Pete (Annette) Sherry of Onalaska and Thomas Sherry (Margie Millis) of Readstown; in-laws, Orville (Bernie) Aspenson of Holmen, Konnie (Alvin) Kvigne of Mt. Sterling and Raymond (Ann) Aspenson of Onalaska; as well as many special nephews, nieces, and many friends. Esther is further survived by a very special friend, Don Erickson with whom she spent the last several years in great companionship. The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude and affection to Don who provided her with loving care and assisted her in living out her personal credo: “Live, love, laugh and be happy!”

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Virgil on February 6, 1997; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Ranallo and Kenneth Erickson; one sister-in-law, Sally Sherry; and two nieces, Cheryl (Ranallo) Mirgai and Kristi (Sherry) Kolb.

Special thanks from the family to the staff of the Vernon Memorial Hospital Hospice Program, especially Barb Robson and Angie Isbell whose tender loving care was greatly appreciated.

Services were held on Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Utica Lutheran Church, Mt. Sterling, with Pastor Steven Fossum officiating. Bill Kvigne was the organist and the vocalists were the Kvigne-Brudos Singers. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Sime, Lon Erickson, Scott Erickson, Bryce Sherry, David Larson, Richard Larson, Steve Sherry and Karl Sherry. A visitation was held the evening prior at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua where a prayer service was led by Pastor Fossum.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in Esther’s honor to the Vernon Memorial Hospice Program, the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” (Viroqua Chapter), the Eagles Cancer Telethon or the Sugar Creek Bible Camp.

“Successful is the person who knows what to remember of the past, what to enjoy in the present and what to plan for in the future.”

{The Thomas Sherry mentioned in Esther’s obit appears to be her cousin, the son, and youngest child, of her father’s brother.}
